I have just returned from that neck of the woods. We stayed at Brighouse Bay caravan park. It has very large hard standings. The site is 4 miles out of Kirkubright. The site is next to the beach, has lots of walks, a nature reserve, course fishing a heated pool and a golf course. This time of year the site is empty and can enjoy all this on your own.

Sorry RR - didn't pick up this post last night. I'll check things out for an open site to suit you. However, if all else fails the "Brooms Road" car park in Dumfries often has overnighters in particularly during the summer. They are not hassled, in fact one or two RVs locally owned are parked there usually although they are not slept in. Bit noisy at 5.30am as the lorries leave, but better than nothing. If you have to get somewhere outside the town and need to do business in Dumfries, this is the best carpark to put the RV if necessary.Need to arrive early to get suitable space though. NO carparking charges in Dumfries!!!!!!!! Must change soon.
Hopefully back soon with something a bit more helpful.

Just occurred to me - are you needing to be in the town of Dumfries or nearby?
Glenmidge Smithy Caravan Park tel: 01387 740328 is officially shut but he says he will take a few callers. Has room for RV and although no hardstandings he says the site is usually OK if it has not been too wet. Call him if interested.
The other one I thought of is at Gretna - might be suitable on the way up - Braids Caravan Park - 01461 337409 says it's open all year (passed it the other day and was well occupied) and specifically advertises it takes RVs.
There is a small site on outskirts of Dumfries at Newbridge on the A76, but I can't find it in the phone book. Don't know how soft the ground is, but it is open now. Will ask around for details.
There is one on the way into the town just before the bypass roundabout but I regret to say it is the very last resort. Lovely helpful man to sell you gas, but the site leaves a lot to be desired.
Brandedleys keeps winning the best kept site in the world awards and Brighouse Bay has more to keep you occupied than most of the towns around here, but both charge accordingly.
Otherwise still looking for something suitable.

Hallo again - had a look at the Newbridge site - They don't have any hardstandings and think it might be a bit soft at this time of year. Have you considered this one

it looks as if it is quite a way from Dumfries, but is only about 16 miles from the town centre. I have friends who have a mobile home there and they like it very much. However, I cannot comment from personal knowledge. Kippford village is very picturesque and has two pubs selling good food the last time I was there.
If you are in Dumfries and fancy a pub meal - try Cavens in Buccleuch Street (pronounced Berclew!) It gets busy, but they can usually get you a table after a short wait. Good real ale pub so Liam tells me. If you do ask if either Sue or Liam are in - we could well be having a coffee there (or something similar!).
What ever you end up doing enjoy your visit.
