Hello
We are based in Edinburgh and have decided to tour the north of Scotland in late Feb for 10 days. We are going to try and take in some skiing or at least sledging for our 6 and 3 year old during the trip. This is depending on weather conditions etc.
We have decided that it will go either way, be fantastically bright, cold and fresh or cold wet and miserable, however we are in the fortunate position to be only at most a 4 hour drive home if the weather is c**p!
One benefit - no midges - we do not go up north during the summer for that reason and that reason alone!
Anyway, we are going to try wild camping sometime and sites the rest - does anyone have any great recomendations for this time of year. Also does anyone know if you can use the childrens facilities at the Aviemore highland resort? Any suggestions regarding indoor stuff for the kids to do would be great to but I think they will be few and far between.
Thanks again, I always get great suggestions from members !

We're also from Edinburgh (although we've lived in Inger-land for some years) and we tend to take winter trips up the Hielands, come hail or high winds.
We often stop at the Rothiemurcus site at Aviemore - open all year, well sheltered, and nice new warm toilet/wash blocks. When we were there last year, we ventured onto the complex (not with the van) to go swimming & use the facilities etc. If you've money, you can use any of the facilities, but be warned - you need plenty. They wanted £10 EACH for a swim, but I managed to persuade the receptionist that we were Very Nice People who didn't deserve to pay that much (one went free, but £5 each still ain't what I'd call cheap).
If you carry on up the road past Rothiemurcus towards Ben Morlich, the Glenmore site at Loch Morlich is on your right, but it's closed until the spring. Provided it's not too snowy, you can drive right up to the Cairngorm car park, and there are places to stop overnight on the way up (or down ).
I'm sure you know about the A939 Cockbridge - Tomintoul road. Do NOT consider it if you've got a big rig, and it's heavy snow (like we did unintentionally two years ago in the Kontiki 820 towing the car.... I do not scare easily, but I had to visit M&S for a change of unmentionables afterwards...)
Viks,
What about the CC site at Braemar, only 6 miles from Glenshee ski resort and it must also be close to the Lecht although I have never been. Stayed there last year and on the way back down stopped off and let the kids have a sledge about, lovely site but it was cold (-13 if I remember correctly). Non members can stay as we booked in like this but joined whilst there. Only thing to watch out for is an English division rally goes there in Feb and books most of the site.
