I have just checked my hotmail and it automatically operates the way you want yours to. I cannot find any method of chaging it. Are you by any chance opening via outlook.
We were down at Canterbury over the weekend seeing Daniel. Had a lovely time
Across the top of the messages are the titles, in blue. If you click on these titles, it will sort the messages by either "From", "Subject", "Date" or "Size". If you click on the "Date", it will sort them chronologically. Clicking on "Date" again will sort them upside down, if you see what I mean.

To the right of "Contacts" you will see Options / Help
This may be the area to make the changes you want, although, like Stew, my messages have always appeared in the format, that you are looking for, ie latest at the top.
Any message with an attachment always goes to the bottom of the pile.

Sorry - I missed your reply. 'Cos of the setup at work, everytime I log in to MHF during the day, it clears the "posts not read" flags, so I can miss repies
I too am on the old version. See the attached screenshot for the column titles you can click on to sort your messages.
