Got back home with my purchase (Hymer Camp 59) yesterday. I know the heating works because I slept comfortably inside while it was -3 outtside, and the 600km were run off with no problem
I have my MoT booked tomorrow morning so I'll be preparing for that today. Assuming we pass, then it's off to get my UK registration on Monday
One question though: Should I turn up at the UK DVLA/LRO with just a pile of papers, or do I need to take the motorhome too (so they can verify that it exists and/or cheack the VIN etc)?

If there's a chance they may want to see it, it looks like I'd better take the Hymer then although to be honest I was hoping not to because the office is in the middle busy town/shopping centre, and the only car parks within a 20 minute walk all have 1.8m-2.0m height restrictions If I have to go shopping there (which I try to avoid) I always take the train in preference to my car...

Having spoken nermerous times to the DVLA local office in Bangor she assured me as I was importing a new van and had the Certificate of conformity I would only need to pop in with the paperwork and the reg docs would be with me within 72 hours!! When quizzed about inspection she said only if you are very unlucky - Helpfull??

I have just sorted out my imported Ahorn camp 550 this week at the DLVA office in newcastle upon tyne
They wanted all the paperwork, remember a uk insurance cover note is required along with the MOT for the tax disc to be issued .
it also takes 72 hours to sort this all out.
If the vehicle is to be inspected then it would have to be booked into a Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) office.
i was asked for my phone number so if they did need to inspect the motorhome then they would give me a call.they never did
tax disc and form to get the number plate's made up arrived 4 days later.
also i was told by a friend a mot inspector that all that is reqiured for a MOT is a offside fog light to be fitted Ģ5 and a few scotch locks and remember to remove the original foglight bulb.
also no need for new headlights ,beam benders will do and you do not need a MPH speedo dial.
i fitted new headlights and can recommend

I don't think the fog lamp bulb on the nearside needs to be removed as there are many vehicles on the road with 2 rear foglamps.

3 days to allocate a registration number? That's ridiculous, a visa can be processed in a matter of hours! We were hoping to dispense with the MoT and red-tape on Monday and then use the Hymer for a half-term break, i.e. this week... It just goes to show how much more efficient the German system is, because I fail to understand what the paper-pushers will do in 3 days that they couldn't do in 30 minutes, while I wait, if they were adequately organised.
I shall visit in person anyway because it not only saves a wasted day in the post, it also reduces the risk of any valuable papers getting lost. Plus, even though I ordered the pack of import registration forms from DVLA's website nearly 2 weeks ago ... it still hasn't arrived!
I swapped the rear lights over yesterday so that the fog is now on the right, reversing light on the left. This revealed some damp in the insulation where the holes are cut for the lights so I need to dry that out somehow (not easy with weather at present) then apply some fresh mastic.
I have also already bought headlights and fitted them, I'll be popping out to sort the alignment in a few minutes, now that its dark. Thanks for the link though.
As to speedo: I understadn that MPH is a legal requirement but not a MoT requirement? How ridiculous is that! I've been running a bike with KPH speedo for the last 10 years, no problem (and as I recall, the registration of that was while-u-wait...).

When I imported a second hand 4x4 from Japan,(MOT at point of import), I went into the local licensing office on the Friday afternoon to register the vehicle, and the number plate authorisation form was with me by first post on the Monday morning.
When changing details on the Hymer, (which previous owners had failed to do), I was asked to take the vehicle down to the local office. When I explained about the length and size of the vehicle and the lack of off street parking, they then agreed to come out and view the vehicle, at a time and place that was conveinient to me.

You will see from my separate postings that I am having problems with getting the MOT in the first place - headlamps on Hymer A Class - good argument for sticking with a coachbuilt maybe!
I had anticipated that when I was over that hurdle the registration would be simple - expected to come out with everything after one visit - Germany can do it as Oilburner says.
