I understand and appreciate what you say pusser, but is AVG really free if you have to register to upgrade, and does it constantly monitor and block any malicious stuff or do you have to scan for it (in which case its already on your system) Its a Bl**dy minefield and as a mere "user" I haven't a clue really.
Hi all,
AVG is free, and if you register to upgrade, then you are upgrading to a paid for version.
On one or two occasions, when I have downloaded files, AVG instantly flashed up a VIRUS ALERT and immediately quarantined the offending file. I then deleted it, and ran a scan just to be sure.
AVG free, checks daily for updates, and so keeps on top of things.

Interesting read. As it says on one post there, the sample size of viruses and malware was quite small (understandably), and doesn't necessarily 'prove' whether one product is better than another.
I personally wouldn't bother changing anything that I've been happy with.

All these tests, be they for software, hardware, cars or Hi Fi etc are very much in the hands of those testing and what they want to see!
It is a given that if you ask someone who has bought a new vehicle that they will say it is great! No one will admit they made a mistake of that magnitude!
My Bro in Law was chuffed with the new speakers he has bought for his cinema room, then picked up my latest copy of 'What Hi Fi' and became cheesed off, because the speakers he bought where not as good as the others he was also looking at! He soon realised that it was down the testers interpretation of the results!
I tried to download the Kasperky product last night and the site seems to have problems - maybe a virus tee hee - so I downloaded it from another source.
It has been running all night finding odd things on that particular computer. I shall see how long it takes to go through the whole thing.
The 'Computer Shopper' I bought yesterday evening has the latest AVG free version on it. I may install this on another computer and see how that goes.

hi all, thanks for all the advice still dont no which way to go,i downloaded avg yesterday anti virus and spy/adware it found 76 inc 4 high risk problems on my computer, i wonder why they wern't picked up by norton,i think i'll let norton slip and see how i get on with avg. any way thanks to all who responded and think in this instance it was great that the thread got highjacked as it allowed me to sit on the sidelines and let all the wise people extol the virtues of their prefered software.again many thanks, astra

I too had slowdown problems with Norton. I now use AVG free and I think it is superb. It does update (on a daily basis) takes seconds. You only have to pay for upgrade if you want extra bells n whistles not really neccessary.

I have downloaded Kaspersky on to two computers and so far am very impressed.
One of the computers has a problem that has been with us for about 6 months. We have been off to many sites and tried many products to solve it - Kaspersky found and resolved it on the first run!
Once it has finished it's first run it does not appear to slow the computer down as much as AVG and Norton.
Will keep you informed as to how it goes.
Regards
Chris

Thanks to you as well Graham for introducing this thread. I had a similar one a while back on same subject. Like you, I had Norton running on my PC and had done for years, renewing and upgrading as necessary. My PC was seriously slow and I even got hit by a Trojan virus. So that was that - I dumped Norton and have no regrets - only not doing it sooner. I use free downloads at the moment and am in process of going over to Kaspersky.
My other best decision was to listen to Spykal (Mike) he has helped me on a number of occasions as I am totally useless when it comes to techie stuff. I trust his advice and judgement and am always very grateful for his help.
Good Luck, let us know how things turn out.
