You should have a Firewall installed on your PC and something better than the one that comes with Windows XP
If you go onto www.zonelabs.com and download the "free Zone Alarm" - not the free trial version, let it set its self up and then read the instructions.
Its a security program that should be installed along with AntiVirus Software, which again should be updated daily. For those who dont have uptodate AV Progs go on to
www.grisoft.com and get the Free AVG Anti Virus Prog, again not the free trial version.
These two programs are used and updated by 1000's who prefer to keep their money in the pocket but still have good software

I used Zone Labs stuff for a couple of years then realised that the program itself is calling home and presumably doing that which Zone Alarm is meant to prevent. So I changed about 4 years ago to Sygate.
AVG I have been using and all my clients are using for at least 5 years and so far for a free virus checker it knocks spots off Norton and Macafee and more to the point it has no effect on the computers performance.
Firewalls, at the end of the day, stop a one in million chance of someone actually wanting to do something on your pc. Whereas it is essential stuff for business as people will want to go on their Servers but even then, it requires a little more than just sticking a firewall on and thinking you are immune from attack. It is placebo - a comforting placebo and I use one knowing full well that if a professional hacker wanted to get on my PC, he could with impunity,
