After years of crawling about unplugging this and sticking in that, I have decided to go totally NTL. I already have NTL upstairs for the boys, NTL broadband and the fixed NTL phone.

As from Monday, I will have NTL telly downstairs and upstairs. This leaves me with a Sky box and card.

Does this mean I can now take this sky box with me abroad and use it for BBC news and stuff providing I take me dish of the wall and stick it on a pole or something. I have had it for over two years maybe more.

Questions are....What progs can u get abroad without the card which presumably will be cancelled once my DD bounces.

Can I use the box on any other satellites?

Is there anything you can think of that I haven't?

I don't think the card as such is cancelled, only the packages you pay for.

The card should then still give you all the free channels (most of them are rubbish) and BBC1 and 2. I think you will also get ITV1 and Channels 4 and 5.
For good information post a question on the newsgroup: uk.tech.tv.sky
or see if you can find it in the FAQ here:-

we tried ours without the card to see what channels we can hope to get once we cancel the package....

BBC and SKY News and basically the shopping channels/ some sports channels/ a channel that seems to just play the beverley Hillbillies all day/ a "very old movie" channel and a load of rubbish channels

no ITV or channel 5, according to satcure, you need a FreToView card for these, but the cards are no longer available

all explained here

Many thanks for that info.. BBC is enuff for me to be happy. OH if I can watch question time abroad sipping a fruity red wine I will be a happy man. And the prog that comes after which I cannot remember the name but recommend anyone to watch it.

Biggusfootus: I think Gabriel the Archaerial would be better for me.

I kicked SKY into touch several years ago after a few unannounced pricehikes, after all the dozens of channels they advertise contain mostly crap and repeats, I call them `car boot programmes`as I believe they buy job lots at the car boot sales!
Is the reason the prices or the farting about with cards etc you are changing? Malc

I binned Sky earlier this year, only had the family pack but that was rubbish, never seemed to have the time to watch it, swapped it for broadband, great move as Jacqui now uses the net which she always said was too slow to be bothered with.

That is the reason Malc as I watch little telly. What I do like watching is mostly on the Beeb anyway. Missus watches a constant stream of Frost, Agatha Christie, Inspector Lyndsey and I take great delight in working out whose dunnit in the first half hour and telling her. Not that I am a clever dicky but because its so bleedin' obvious. Find the most unlikely person who could have done it with the strongest alibi and they are always the culprits.

p.s. As for repeats, Sky has turned them into an art form. They bring on repeats and repeat the repeat one hour later on the next channel down. If you miss this then go to a totally different channel next week and watch it all again.

On the side of our bungalow I have a dish 1.5 meters wide which I bought in about 1990, its an analogue dish and still works, it will traverse from horizon to horizon and will pick up most of the different satillites in the northern hemisphere. But still (like you) I dont get time to watch TV in any amount so just watch the BBC evening news and let the Boss watch on the Freeview digi system all the dreary and predictable soaps. As for repeats, I am of the opinion that all the TV companies collectivly take the p..s at all of us!
Tin hat on!
Malc
