We were planning a trip to Ireland for july and wanted to take our six month old puppy with us then somebody suggested that we might be up against similar rules as taking pets to france and beyond, is this true ?

No preparation or documentation is necessary for the movement of pets directly between the UK and the Republic of Ireland.

I agree and have done it often - just check what arrangements you have to make on the ferry. I doubt that you could leave puppy in your van for example.

Where? Ireland

How? By ferry

Why? As with destinations within the UK, no preparation or documentation is necessary to take pets across to Ireland. Ferry operators include Stena Line which operates three routes to the Republic of Ireland – and one to Northern Ireland. Dogs travel free of charge but aren’t allowed on the passenger decks and must remain in the car or in kennels on board (subject to availability). To explore the south, the crossing from Fishguard to Rosslare takes just 110 minutes on the Stena Express, or three-and-a-half hours on Stena Europe. From here, it’s not far to some of southern Ireland’s highlights: unspoilt beaches, and beautiful countryside stretching inland and to the south, with walks to get any tail wagging.

No prob's, on most of the 'southern' routes they have kennels or you can walk them on deck.....

Hi all,

The rules must have changed prior to 05/Jan/07, when the link page to DEFRA was last modified, as last year (April 06), we had to have a letter from our vet, confirming our dog's medical well being.

The vet chatged £25.00, and throughout the whole trip, no officials of any description asked to see it. Shocked Shocked Shocked

Jock.

Blimey for Ireland?

Would our pet passports suffice?

Do we need to see a vet on the return journey the same as Europe?

Thanks for that Bouncer, good to know. Dont fancy having the van trashed while we are on board.
Had a phone call from a nice man at Defra this morning confirming that we dont need any documentation whatsoever for Ireland he suggested however just check with the ferry company for any special travel arrangements they may insist on.
