I understand that it is unwise to use passwords and sensitive personal information, etc, when using an open/insecure wireless connection. I also understand that even WEP and WPA can be tapped into, although it is unlikely, apparently.
Does any know what the situation is with regards to internet security, when using GSM/GPRS/3G, via a sim card and datacard on a laptop?
Thanks,
Jock.

tapping WPA is (still) practically impossible. Cracking WEP however is easy, tools to do that within minutes can be downloaded from the Internet. But still, WPA only encrypts the wireless part of the transmission, so if the WiFi hotspot itself is compromised, then you have a problem.
If you use GSM/GPRS/3G, then the connection use the (always encrypted) mobile phone network to connect to the provider of your choice. Means, as long as your IP provider can be trusted, there should be no more issues than at home.
Except, that it will cost slightly more...

Gerhard

Hi Gerhard,
Many thanks for the info. It's exactly what I needed to know.
At the weekend, someone wanted to send their credit card details to MHF (new recruit ) via my GPRS connection, but as I wasn't sure about the security aspect, I politely put them off. However, that's not to say that we have lost the new member.
Thanks again Gerhard,
Jock.
