I am an avid film buff and have a collection of over 800 Dvd's. The disks take up a lot of space, but I would hate to dispose of them. Has anyone looked at storing Dvd's on an external hard disk. They are now so cheap, and you could store over 100 films on a disk the size of a paperback. But how to play them back.

Copy the disks as they are with no compresion i.e. they go to the Harddrive at aprox 7gig per DVD.
Compress the DVD's using software such as DVD Shrink (i can give more info via email if you need it), the problem here is you lose some quality.
You can change them all to Mpeg/Avi and play them on your Computer.
With the first two options you keep the vob files and can burn them to DVD at any time, you can also play them from most software DVD players like Cyber Link.
I personaly would buy a 1 or 2 terabyte station and back them up in full copying every disk as it is.
If you need more info just ask.
A good sorce of info is

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, women on each arm, champagne in one hand, credit card in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming …."WOO HOO, WHAT A RIDE"

I was getting a bit cheesed off with the amount of DVD's I had, along with storing and being to access them.
No one else in the family seemed to want to put them back alphabetically!
So I went over to this storage system:

The DG 100.
And then got this software:

DVD Profiler allows you to automatically load all the data on a DVD including covers. This is either by automatically identifying the DVD when you put it in the pc or by searching the name of the film. You then manually enter the location which is based on each container of 100 DVD's. A1, A2 etc: I am up to 500 DVD's.
From the software you can easily search for genre, actor, director etc etc.
It has made movie selection and viewing simply superb and easy. Storage is simple with 100 DVD's in each box.
I did look at the hard drive idea but decided that it would need a bank of hard drives with back ups. To then use in various areas around the house or to loan to family or friends would make it impossible.
Regards
Chris
ps Forgot to add that the folder that comes with the disc holder is for keeping the original DVD covers in so you can search by looking through the covers. Each cover as well as each disc has the location identity on A1, A2 etc.
