The story of the motorhome and dogs stolen in France is a worrying tale.
We usually shop together and leave the van parked while we go sight-seeing.

We always leave the alarms on but have seen car alarms totally ignored.

It started me wondering if leaving one of a pair of walkie talkies in the van and taking the other one with you would work. Given a pair with 2-3 km range and both switched on you would certainly be able to hear the engine start, sounds of broken glass, dogs barking and any other signs that all was not well. At the very least you'd be able to get back to your van possibly to prevent it being stolen or at least to get witness statements while there is anyone there to have seen it driven away.

Signs could be left on the van that it is wireless protected.

I've never used these walkie talkies so I don't know what I'm talking about but just wandered.

I would buy a Strikeback if I were you. Mine sends me a text message if the alarm is activated and some have the facility to start when the large nasty thief is standing over you but once stopped it is immobilised. There are lots of other options which we don't want to give away but with the phone option you have a certain amount of control over the alarm. You gets what you pay for,

From what ive seen of the cheapy walkie talkies youd be lucky to get any reception at all inside the supermarket. They work ok in wide open spaces but are rubbish as soon are you go near a building with them. Add to that the interference you would get from one handset been inside a vehicle and its a none starter me thinks!! Sad

Better spending your money on a decent immobiliser/alarm with a "soundbomb" fitted inside the vehicle that is so loud it makes the ears of anyone inside the vehicle bleed (result!!!!) Very Happy

them at the same time!!)

Thanks everyone...not it seems a winner !

The Zimbabwean way to protect a precious car was to spring load a crossbow bolt into the centre of the steering wheel, released when pressure was applied to the seat. I suspect there would have been no need for an amplifier had that been activated.

A little extreme however and I'm sure the CC would not approve !

The cheapest and most effective antitheft idea, is to fit a hidden fuel tap, this allows the thief to start and drive away your MH with confidence, only to break down in the most incoveiant place, attracting all the wrong attention, and you will more than likely have the police there to sort out the abandond vehicle in minuets,
Works evey time, and if you forget to turn it on well it wont take 5 seconds to sort will it

The tap is a better option Jock with this method you let them move it a short distance and it konks,=Runaway and it gets noticed halfway across a juction
using the electric soleniod it wont start = rip radio out and Nick TV instead
