Hi

I set of from Southport last night for the 250 mile drive to Ipswich at 7.30pm. As I approached the end of the M6 I was just thinking what a great trip I was having when I saw a sign saying A14 closed after the M1!!!

Seems they have just closed a stretch east bound from the M1 to almost Kettering. The alternative route takes you down the M1 and then I think the A45. You are told to follow the black squares. Suddenly the black squares run out at a slip road back onto the A14 - which was also closed.

People were going around and around in circles. I was lucky in that I asked a lorry driver (who always know a way) and he said that you were expected to assume that when the black squares ran out you should follow the black circles (logical!!!!????? to whom?), he said follow the A509 to Ketering and then turn left.

His directions were perfect and if only I had got his contact details I would be putting him forward to become the transport minister.

Finally got back home at 2AM, a delay of 2 and a half hours.

I am not sure but I think these closures are going on until September and are between 8pm and 6AM

Hi all,

My gripe about the A14, (and I am on it often), is that it is a major link up between the Midlands and East Anglia, via the M6, M1, A1M, and yet it is only a dual carraigeway. There are always queues at the Catthorpe interchange, and they are horrendous.

That two lane M11 in Cambs/Essex is another pain in the proverbial.

Jock.

Thanks for that about the A14, sitting here I can hear it we are that close. We don't actually get that many hold ups around Kettering itself , occasionally for accidents or major road works, but its if we want to escape from either end, ie on to the A1 nightmare most of the time, and to the M1/M6 all of the time.

But then I think how lucky we are to live in a place so well serviced for roads and links and to the amount of places we can get to with ease. I look at my family in the heart of East Yorkshire and it takes them forever to get any where.
