| I'm about to start fitting out a combination motorhome/horsebox based on a Vauxhall Movano with a fibreglass body. It's been lined out and insulated with proper dg sliding windows. I've already done similar work but never fitted a space heater. I want one which we can have on 'low' all night, as we may use it out of season. I have an old Carver Trumatic from an 80's caravan which has the air intake and flue projecting through the floor, which would be ideal as I don't really want to make too many holes in the sides and none in the roof, as it will be difficult due to the construction. The vehicle body has an aluminium frame between the outer and inner skins of the sides and roof. Unfortunately, the heater I have is a bit grotty and I wondered if anyone could suggest a type which won't break the bank and which would be fairly easy to fit. The Carver is discontinued and no spares are available. Many thanks. |

Hello Eddie,
If you are starting off from scratch I would steer away from gas heating.
I would suggest an Eberspacer which will run off the diesel (Or petrol) in the vehicle tank. This is the type of heater fitted into the cabs of most HGV's, I can recommend them. A bit costly to start with but well worth it.
Theres also another diesel heater on the market now, Japanese I think, but I have no experiance of them.
Regards Eddie |

Hi Eddie,
Thanks for your opinion. Any reason for not advocating gas as all caravans have them and most motorhomes..? The Eberspachers are very pricey, about £800 just for the basic heater, which may be a price too far considering everything else I have to buy. I have to put in a gas system for cooking and maybe water heating so gas is favourite so far. There are many different heaters available in America, but we seem to be limited for choice here, and what is available is expensive.. As usual!
Regards
Eddie |

Hello Eddie
The reason I advocated diesel heating is because you seem as if it will be regularly used throughout the winter months therebye using a lot of gas. I suppose a fitted gas tank would be the option if you wanted to use gas.
Its one of these things that will never have a definitive answer you'll probably get a dozen E Mails now saying that someone uses gas all year and they are perfectly happy with their setup.

Thanks Hymmi, I'm originally from Leicester but have lived in the Highlands since I escaped in the 70's.. I do have an e-mail address of one breaker somewhere dahn souf.
Eddie, I guess we may use it for an end of season skiing holiday at some point but I think if I can get a secondhand gas heater similar to the one I have, it would be best.. The new oven and hob/sink unit arrives in the morning so I expect I'll be locked in my shop making units for a while..

Often go on ebay and usually for a bit less than an eberspacher!
