Being a newbie with my first motorhome I could do with some advice/direction in relation to my Sat Nav.
I had a fantastic summer so far having spent 5 weeks in Scandinavia and 10 days in England in my motorhome. I got some experience with my new GPS which I found to be the most fantastic bit of gear, a NUVI 310.
However I think it was designed for working people, company reps etc. as it has two settings the “fastest route or the shortest route” .
For someone like myself meandering in my own time and I have plenty of it now D.G. I would like to be able too design my own route on my PC and download it on to the nuvi which I can’t do with the nuvi 310.
It would be great to be able to do this as my nuvi has sent me down some narrow windy roads (will I ever forget Witchbottom Lane) left some skidmarks in Norway also.
What Sat Nav’s could I do this with?

Sorry I can't answer your questions re. satnav.
I can however offer you a warm welcome to motorhomefacts.com.
There are a number of our contributers who are pretty expert with satnav and I'm sure it won't be long before you get some answers.
Glad you enjoyed your Scandinavian visit, it's a place we've not visited.
Do you think you could put some of your notes together for the benefit of our members. I'm sure it would be appreciated

Hi Labbad and welcome to MHF.
I think the two settings you mention ( shortest and fastest) are common to most satnavs. They certainly work on the Blaupunkt and Tomtom we have.
We have found that asking for the shortest route gets us just that - even if that means we are taken through people's back gardens and along alley-ways. Fastest route is usually the motorway or similar but not necessarily as it does allow for short cuts between motorways if the road is a main one.
I often plan a route on the computer using ViaMichelin's website or similar ( Multimap / RAC and so on). When you have honed it to perfection on there it take a bit longer to set it up on the satnav. This I do by going from point to point along the planned route and treating each two towns as starting point and destination respectively.
There is a way of doing it all on the satnav but I find using the computer easier as you get a better overviewof the route and the diversions you want to make.

I have or should I say had a Garmin sold it with the MH. Any how what I use to do was decide on my route on a AA map then set up my sat nav with way points to force it to follow the way I wanted to go. I also stopped the thing from auto recalculating if I wandered of route. The reason being some wee road were not fit to explore, so I would continue on keeping a eye on the mapped route and then find a better road to rejoin it. That way it wasn't nagging me for going of route. Especially usefull in rural France's little villages where it would try and send me up some impossible roads.

You hit the nail on the head I finished up on some harrowing roads in England and Norway hair raising efforts one in Norway was a severe downhill with 15/20 hairbends and about the width of the camper.
