A petrol engined camper with an lpg conversion is my next project, but I don't think I will do it this way - the filler cap access flap seems far too big.

Hi Hedge
Very Interestink.......seems like he has probably been running it on domestic heating LPG, notice that there is a LPG hand pump pictured on the page for pumping it from his storage tank to the van. I think he may get more for the pump than for the van!

I pointed out that pump to the gent. who sent me the link.
Within minutes he had offered £70 for it!
So what is the scenario:- Transit man has a 47kg cylinder stored permanently at his local tool hire depot; drives in, gets a refill, transfers it straight into the Transit's tank & away?
Why not just have 2 x 47 kgs upside down in the van? |

Hi Hedge
That may be the way he does it but I would guess he has a Bulk Domestic tank....that would make it really cheap to run the van!
I know that some folks run their diesels on "red" diesel to avoid paying the duty on it and the authorities can and do check vans at roadside checks. If a vehicle has ever used "red" they can tell and can confiscate the vehicle (i think)....so I wonder if they can tell the difference between Domestic LPG and Autogas.

Customs & Excise do not hesitate. Seized the truck of a recovery operator & then nailed him for everything else they found. He was not at all happy.
He would have been far better off being an MEP/MP if he wanted to fiddle

Maybe not, but awkward questions can be asked, home consumption checked, receipts requested........
"but I'm helping the environment....." might be the killer response don't you think? |

Hi Hedge
All this reminds me of my first car:
In Early 1961 I had just bought my first car, and guess what! Petrol Rationing coupons were issued and there was a shortage of petrol at the pumps. There was I with my new (very seconhand) car and not much petrol. At the time I was an apprentice engineer and made a demand valve and gas injector for my A30 which allowed me to run on a LPG gas supply from a Calor gas cylinder. Petrol was only 4/3p (21p) a gallon at the time so it was not a viable way to run the car once petrol became available again....a pity because I think I must have been ahead of my time and could have made my fortune!

Hi Mike
If I may be seriously impressed for a moment....................... have you ever thought of offering advice on how to do a cheap lpg conversion?
What a pity, I am about to do the usual tedious enforced trek south for a few months; but earlier next year perhaps...........although I will be on line for 2 more days..... |
