Planning a trip back to the UK for Christmas.Have got the new "all the aires france " book.So here I am looking through the book to find aires on my route ,then I get the idea of finding them on Google Earth with GPS Lat/Lon having a look to see whats around etc.sad or what

Not sad ...I like planning too ...well up to a point .. it heightens the anticipation and whets the appetite for travel...mind you with the internet available on route it has taken the need to plan every detail away. That does not mean that we are not spontaneous in the places we visit...no plan is ever fixed we change at the drop of a hat... or at the drop of rain
I have found an interesting free little program that may be useful to you...especially if you like such software and you use TomTom ( not sure that you do ) ...if you don't use TomTom then never mind it may be seen by others who do and read this thread
It is called Tyre and allows you to plan a journey and stops in Google earth and then it automatically creates an itinerary for TomTom.

Put me in the sad club
For my trip around Switzerland i plotted my route on autoroute then switched between autoroute and windows live local and google earth to make sure i was taking what seemed like the most scenic roads
I then use a GPS reciever on my laptop to follow my route

Now that I am retired I do things differently so instead of planning routes and logistics I look at places and things that I might like to do/see. Then we just take it as it comes but having some idea of the history or geography of the place you're at enables you to come up with a plan for the next day. Your GPS is a great help here becuse you can say I want to get to x how long?
This way when you get back you don't suddenly find out you missed the 'best' bits.
