I have has no problem getting the VAT exemption as I receive the higher rate of the mobility component of DLA (Disability Living Allowance) and the lower rate of the care component. Despite being in receipt of DLA however, I have always had to sign the declaration form given to me by the dealer.

I am now over 65 but first received DLA when I was in my early 50. I received injuries to my neck and lower spine in an RTA that have affected my mobility. They also caused me to be pensioned off from my employment in the NHS.

I would suggest the only time a letter from a doctor may be required to get the VAT exemption is if the person developed mobility problems after the age of 65. After this age it is no longer possible to get DLA.

I may be wrong but I thought I read in some of the literature shown on this site concerning VAT exemtion for the disabled that electric scooters do NOT qualify!

Hi all, We purchased our motorhome from Brownhills 2 years ago and as Wife is disabled (she is a wheelchair/scooter user full time) we paid no VAT on the motorhome, quite some paperwork had to be filled in and a letter obtained from her GP to state that she was a wheelchair/scooter user full time.

The vehicle had to be adapted-ie: ramps to the side door, and electric winch, and a small wheelchair which is narrow enough to pass through door, all this had to be completed by Brownhills before we took possession of the vehicle.
We also are able to get our servicing and habitation check Vat free, notice 701/7 Vat relief for disabled people from Customs and Excise, these forms have to be filled in by the disabled pereson and presented when the vehicle goes in.

Hope this helps in some way

are you in receipt of motobility allowance , are you registered as disabled , can you walk 5 metre,s with out stopping ,
to beable to claim v.a.t. free , you may buy abroad , best place more for little , you have to pay v.a.t. on entry , you must have adaption as is said , a lift , for wheel chair which most people remove when they get back , the accelerater is an adaption that is accepted , if you have all or any of the above , you have no problems , good luck ,

denton.

Hi
We purchased our van vat free.
As Farhan is in a wheel chair all we needed was a letter stating his disability. We then had to have the van adapted in some way. We had wheelchair clampdowns added. We already had our own ramps but when we picked up the van the dealer had to take a photo of the ramps in place to show that the van was intended for a wheelchair user. The dealer filled in all the relevant paper work and I just signed it.
As I also use a wheelchair (when needed) I asked if I could have had it vat free in my name. THe response was Yes proving my doctor gave a letter stating that I did use the wheelchair.
We bought the van from Westcroft, now part of brownhills so they should be able to help you.

We have just ordered a new motorhome , VAT-free. Our daughter is disabled. I am the registered owner. There was no problem and we didn't fill anything in. We just showed the DLA forms and Campbells did the rest. We were offered it last year but bought used.

Any problems PM me.

Regards

Tim

I might add too, we needed to make an adaptation to satisfy the criteria for receiving the discount. We could have just had a locking handle added to the habitation door but added a bike rack instead. This will hold our daughter's wheelchair. She is not a full-time wheelchair user as she has reasonable mobility. She has complex medical needs, including very severe learning difficulties. She has the wheelchair because she is a danger near roads and will not walk for too long.

Campbells knew all this and we are still eligible. We are just waiting to pick it up as all the financial side of things has been completed.

Hi all just been to Brownhills today to check out the different layouts and size.

Found one we like and after talking to salesman and explaining the additions that I would require i.e. Auto clutch and left foot accelerator he advised that we might be eligible for VAT exempt on the vehicle.

So question is has any one on here been able to get this? If so how?

I have checked customs & excise site but as with any gov site you need a degree to decipher it. There is a phone number and I will check it out on Monday just thought I would ask on here.

Much obliged

Pete

Shocked There is no such thing as stated in title. The question is do you qualify by reason of your disability. Last month a major fraud ring was broken where people have been claiming VAT exemption and have now been found out. The weakness is the dealer where the proof stops-many years ago you needed to involve Customs and Excise but this was passed to the dealers . Guess what some are believed to be stretching the elastic and so expect a crack down by C&E. Out of interest the fine is levied on the dealer not the purchaser unless culpability can be proved. So keep you evidence watertight. Rolling Eyes
