I Just WISH .. we had a 2 tier system for disabled folk ... Blue Badge for the 'walking wounded like me " and a RED Priority Badge for severe disabled who cannot walk at all and often need wider parking spaces nearer shop doors etc .Those folk really need that extra bit of help !
It's a difficult one this. We often take my 94 year old father in law in the car and used to take my mother. Both need wheelchairs right to the car door but, once in the wheelchair, we can push them any distance. Logically we should not need to display the blue badge and take up a disabled space BUT, the average car parking space is too narrow to get the wheelchair to the car door.
If we find an ordinary space that is empty on one side then sure as fate it won't be when we get back.
What would be useful is some wider car parking spaces some way from the shop or whatever that are reserved for people who are accompanied by an able bodied carer.

Disabled parking bays should provide room to be able to transfer a person from the vehicle into a wheelchair Grizzly. If they don't then a complaint to the local authority/car park owner should be made.

Sorry Invicta; I didn't make it clear. The disabled bays do provide this space but we don't really need to park close to the shop or whatever as we can wheel the chair without problems. We'd like to be able to leave those bays for people who are driving themselves but can only walk a short distance. What would suit us is a bay with extra space but not necessarily close to the shop.
I had the same problem 3 years ago when I had my leg in plaster and could not get on with crutches so needed a wheelchair. There is no such thing as a temporary blue badge and supermarkets ( well Tesco and Sainsbury's anyway) would not give me a piece of paper saying we were parked in the disabled bays with their knowledge. This meant we had to park in the normal bays but unload the wheelchair and me first before my OH parked and vice versa when we got back.

Since decriminalisation of parking offences,I am hearing the same story about 'Parking Nazis'. Despite their protestaions they ARE on a piece rate bonus, they ignorant of ALL traffic legislation especially the Blue Badge.but they interpret sufficient to issue a ticket there is no latitude or sweet talking they just don't listen. Our local Authority Wirral are introducing an offence of parking more than !.5' from the kerb,be warned this starts in March 2008, are we letting them have a licence to print money??
