camera won't start

Anyone able to help? We have been away this weekend with friends and one has a Fujifilm camera less than two years old but out of warranty that will not start at all. He has checked the batteries, they are fine and cleaned the terminals but it is still as dead as the proverbial dodo. Any ideas??
