We intend motorhoming throughout Europe and UK for about 6 months beginning early April.

The situation there has more choice so seems even harder to sort out than it is here in Australia so I would appreciate any pointers please. I have a son working in London so could get the phone in his name so that may make it simpler so the question is what provider might be best for that length of time, any offering prepaid or short contracts, call costs, etc. We intend returning each summer for at least three years if that makes a difference

I'll also be needing internet access but I will ask that question on the correct forum

Thanks

Addition -- I should mention we are not big phone users so call charges are not the biggest consideration. We do have one GSM phone that is unlocked - two band unit 900/1800 Nokia 3210 but our others are CDMA and NextG which are not compatable.

Tony

We have just come back from a similar European trip (April to October) and I used Vodafone as they have a system called Passport that charges you 75p fixed amount per call and then uses the minutes from your home contract so you don't collect the huge roaming charges.

Obviously depends where you will be phoning but could be worth looking at. Also not sure what the shortest contract you could get would be.

Having said that, they messed up the billing and the full charges came through - still trying to sort that one out and I understand that it is a common problem so maybe not a ringing endorsement!

We also managed to speak via Skype sometimes using our internet connection - once spoke to friends in New Zealand from the depths of a forest in deepest Portugal! Ability to use Skype was very dependent on the speed of connection which was not fast enough most times.

3 are doing a Skype mobile now - may be worth looking at.

Hi

I think that the www.three.co.uk tariffs are the cheapest, and when in certain countries such as Italy or Ireland, there is no roaming charge. You are charged at your UK rates providing you are on the local Three tariff such as Three Italia etc.

If you can get a broad band connection (Wifi) then skype is by far the best (free) even if you skype out to a land line (1cent per min). We have a USRobotic 9601 USB phone which is much better than using the laptops built in microphone & speakers

Hi.

While we are in the UK we use T mobile for the net through a USB connected phone. For Ģ27.50 per month it gives us unlimited internet access and worked very well. In the rest of Europe we use the WiFi on the campsites we stay on. You can then use Skype for free.
