Changing ISP - Moving house

We are moving shortly and although we want to keep a BT line and current telephone number I want to change from BTinternet to another ISP.

Can I simply give notice to BTinternet and after we move use another ISP or will I have to obtain the MAC code before I can go to someone else?

Anyone had any experience of this situation please?

You should ask BT, but I think you will find that as you are keeping that number then you will need to give notice and ask for a mac code.providing of course that you are not contracted into a 18 month deal.
who are you thinking of using.there are some companies that only charge per month.and have no problems about hosting etc.

Hi Gillian

We changed recently. I phoned the Tiscali support line, and requested a MAC code. A day or so later, it was emailed and texted to me. I passed this onto TalkTalk, and the transfer occurred on the day TT said it would.

Have you been on a 12 month contract with BT? You may need to give a month's notice.

The transfer meant we were without internet for an hour or two.

Hi,

You have a few variables there, however you will have to obtain a MAC code off BT to change a provider. Most BT broadband options are on a contract, check that or you may have to buy yourself out of your contract. Also I would check with your intended provider about broadband in your new address not all are available in all areas, they will no doubt answer all your questions. Do it by e/mail on there web site costs nothing then.

I thought I would do a search for the best current provider.
I haven't got any particular preferance, I just want good service at a reasonable price.

We've been with bt since the days of dial-up and should be well out of contract but I think I we are on one month's notice.

We are going to live 2 doors from our daughter who has btbroadband so I would expect that broadband is available to our 'new' house.

Just read your post.
I moved house in 2005,(about 200 yards down the same road actually), and like you kept my own number.
Talktalk, my ISP at that time, said it would take two weeks to get back on line, even after giving the requisite notice.
I waited the two weeks and more and called again, only to be told that due to an error the process had not been started, so at least another two weeks.
I cancelled immediately, contacted my current ISP Toucan, who got me up and running in about 8 days.
I was still being hounded by Talktalk (and their collection agency) for bills being charged on the line for nearly a year afterwards, despite a fortune spent in phone calls. Eventually I went to the regulator who made Talktalk repay monies owed, plus Ģ50 compensation.

Autostratus,

I meant that not all companies will offer there best deal in all areas, for instance I wanted to change to Sky, but they were not able to offer there best customer deal as they do not have a presence in my local exchange, they were only able to offer me there more expensive package. So ask.

We have thought of that but she is having some trouble with her wireless connection at the moment.
I might get a connection and let her pay me.
I've been doing some research and have a number to ring to get Ģ5 discount off my Option 3 Broadband and get the Hub and phone free AND if I'm lucky persuade them to give me Bt Vision for free.

You never know. I might stay with BT. Laughing
