have bought a Belkin N Wireless Notebook Card, installed software, etc but can't get it to connect.
Sat beside someone's router with laptop and typed in WEP code, but wouldn't connect. Sat outside Mcdonalds (Mcd told me didn't need password/code) wifi recognised router and said connected, but when went into internet explorer said off line.
has anyone got any ideas? - we're not high techie so would appreciate idiot's guide!

thanks for responses, sorry got delayed getting back on line to you.
Veralin, how do you disable wep?
LadyJ, how do you enable wifi
possible we've done/tried these things already, but you'll gather we're not v techie
since posting, we've found a forum that says Belkin is great unless you encounter problems and advised to take it back to the supplier!
can't get online help from Belkin unless logged in with Belkin wifi, and if you can't get the thing to work it's not a lot of use.
were hoping to use it abroad as our means of online communication.. oops
any further help/suggestions/clarifications what we're doing wrong, much appreciated.

Do you have access to a wireless network?
ok, if you are getting the message connected coming up in the bottom right hand corner then the problem has to be with the ip settings. For most Wifi points it will need to be set DHCP enabled. You can start by checking your wireless connection by simply moving the mouse over the wireless connection symbol at the bottom right. It's an image of a pc with "radio waves". Move the mouse over that and let us know what it says.
It'll be something like
Wireless Network connection: (network name)
Speed 52 Mbps
Signal Strength: excellent
Status:Connected
Double click on the Wireless connection symbol and click properties
Double click on internet protocol and make a note of the values.
I'd then try setting it to obtain an IP address to automatic and obtain DNS automatically.
Best of luck
Doug

Steles,
It is going to be very difficult to give you guidace through the forum in view of your lack of knowledge.
Belkin have an excellent help line that is a free number from the UK. They will talk you through the procedures and make sure that everything is correct.

thanks for your suggestions. unfortunately we've taken it back to PC world who refused help unless we parted with £199 for home visit, but as we don't have router at home they couldn't do it anyway! they couldn't suggest any alternatives either. couldn't ring freephone no as don't have landline. wifi only meant for use in Spain where 3 usb modem doesn't work.
wondering whether there's something we can buy in Spain, similar to our 3 modem, but non-contract?
