I have been using sat nav every day for about 5 years now. My work takes me all over Europe driving an 18m road train. My first Sat Nav was a Garmins SP3 very good and you can also change it to allow for Trucks (large motorhome) it tends to keep you on main roads until the last moment . just recently upgraded to Tom Tom 910 exelent upto date traffic and speed cameras but no large vechile facility on it. You have to be very careful it will take you down roads you would think twice about going down in your car. Used as an aid to get you to your destination their, great follow it blindly and it will get you stuck somewhere. I always zoom in on the route to check if i can get to the final address. Sometimes its better to turn off the route the Sat Nav tells you to go it might be 100 yards longer but the roads are better for the size of vechile. The fastest route / quickest route is not always the best.

Hi there. We have been in Halford today talking about getting a new sat nav. In the conversation we were advised to go to www.lowbridges.com
The cost for the information on there is £9.95 and this gives you all the low bridges and eliminates all the small roads etc. It apparently lets you put in your vehicle height etc., I look at the site with a view to taking this as soon as we get whatever new sat nav we finally decide on. We have Navman at the moment, but its a bit old etc.

I've got that Polo - thanks to a recommend from asprn - but I don't know about putting your vehicle height in. You can label bridges lower/ close to your height so that you get a warning bell at a selectable distance from the bridge in question. And you get regular updates. The same guy is now offering all the UK truckstops for the same price.

It always tells me I am on the A10 when I am on the A1
It tell me I have arrived at my destination when I am often miles away.
It tells me to bear right when really I need to go left (only seems to happen in the Ferrybridge area)
Needless to say the thing is like the reverse camera - switched off.

Anyway, can't stop. Must drive along some narrow lanes to the nearest cashpoint so I can afford a round of golf in South Wales! I'd love to know the daftest thing member's sat navs have suggested they do.
Andy ours told us once to DO A U-TURN well that is fair enough but in the middle of an autobahn I think not.
Incidentally, when you look for the nearest, all gps's as far as I know will show the distance in a straight line (autotrader does the same when looking for cars...wales is nearer than ever!)... something to do with the shape of the earth so I was told....
If we need to find the distance, I think we have to calculate a route to it, then you will get the road distance.
