We are about to set out on a year long european tour.

With regards to the greencard, Safeguard are asking for dates I will travel to and to which countries as they say you are only allowed in certain countries for a few months - turkey for example. However on a one year trip we have not made definite dates as we like to travel where the wind takes us. We also don't know which countries we will going to yet.

Is this normal? Can't I just ask for a greencard with ticks on each country in europe and turkey and morocco? and with no specific dates?

As you don't actually need a Green Card for the member states of the EU why don't you leave the two outside countries - Turkey and Morrocco - until just before you decide to visit them, if indeed you do at all. Then a quick phone call to Safeguard should get you fixed up.

I didn't think Green cards existed anymore. But I am sure someone will put us right.

I have had green cards in the past and they were always for specific dates.
That said, green cards are not required for the EU, Switzerland, Norway provided the certificate states you are covered in that country. But if you are visiting countries that do need green cards, then I think you will find that dates have to be specified. But maybe you could build in some slack to the dates?

For thse who have never seen a manual Green Card this what they look like.

I don't know about Safeguard but Comfort will issue you a green card for 120 days. The only countries you will need it for is Turkey and Morocco.

As somebody has already suggested you could contact Safeguard as and when you need the cover. A photocopy of a green card is not acceptable it must be the original as with the vehicle registration document.

Make sure the names on the Green Card and the vehicle registration document are the same or you could be in for a spot of bother at the border. Also the card is not valid unless signed by the driver.

Another point worth remembering is that the vehicle is imported duty free into Morocco & Turkey and the details are entered in the drivers passport. The driver will have a problem trying to leave the country with out the vehicle.

Safe travelling.

Contact your insurance company (Safeguard?) and give them the dates and all the countries you might be visiting.

They are unlikely to issue you with anything, but you will be on their system as "abroad" so no problems if you are unfortunate enough to have an incident.

Do also inform your bank and/or credit card companies or they might cancel your withdrawal facilities, as a safeguard to you in case your cards have been nicked and are being used abroad.

Cheers

1. You do not need a Green card any more within EU/EEA

2. All policies issued in the EU cover you for minimum requiremmenst in any other EU country when you visit

3. Beware, the minima vary widely, both as to fully comp, TP and the financial limits of cover, about £75,000 in some of the former |eastern Europena countries

4. Your Insurance certificate and policy will give a maximum number of days you are covered at UK cover whilst travelling abroad each year, 60, 90, 120. There should be a line in each of french, Spanish, German and Italian to say that., Any more and you must buy extended cover which is usually issued as a green card and policy endorsement

5. Few policies are for 365

6. You must sort out cover for all year. It may well not cover non eu countries which are part of the Green card scheme area

7. You will probably have to pay for a Green Card. It is a good idea to have one as the Spanish Police will more readily accept it as a bail bond than a policy with one line in Spanish

If you go to Turkey or Morocco you will need a green card

I posted a link to the Green card site when this came up last, about 4 or 5 months ago do a search

I have been talking insurance to a variety of companies today and yesterday.
Green cards are not necessary from a number of insurance companies for all EU member states and Croatia with the major exception of Equity Redstar who say EU only and will not give out Green cards. Comfort will cover for Croatia but will not give me green card for Bosnia (needed to get to Dubrovnik through the Neum area). Caravan Guard will charge £17.50 for a card for Bosnia and Saga give them free.
I'm waiting for written confirmation to arrive in tomorrow's post.
By the way, Saga was by far the cheapest quote.
