Is anyone up to speed with the Alsace and the wine routes?
I would like a mini tour of the area, essentially starting out at Obernai. Any suggestions, or shall I just follow a coach full of tourists and go where they go?

:DBuon giorno Russell, one of the best trips you can do from Obernai is up to Mt. St.Odile - as you come out of the campsite slip road, and you turn right, just go straight on instead of turning left onto the main ring roads. A beautiful drive through pine forest up to the monastery, from where you have a birds eye view of the whole of Alsace. From here you can then decide what you want to see and how far to go. I usually just follw my nose - the main roads West out of Colmar are the best ones for wine routes.

We stayed on a good site at Ribeauville and visited vinyards at Riquewihr and near the pretty town of Eguisheim. There is also a decent site and pretty wine town at Turckheim.

Hi Russell,
normally, I would would always try to get a bit off the beaten track. However, that is hardly possible in Alsace... But especially if you are interested in vine, then you might want to visit some of the smaller, less known vine yards.
Obernai is indeed a good starting point. Mt. St. Odile is clearly a must-see, then, as long as your outfit is not too large, follow the small roads that are approximately "half-uphill" to Andlau. Many vine yards there.
Further south, Sélestat is often underestimated. It is a common misconception that this is a pure industrial town, and the vast stretch of commercial suburbs is indeed less than helpful. However, it has a quite impressive medieval town centre.
From there, do not make the mistake to use the motorway, but go half-uphill again and follow the D35, then D1b towards Ribeauvillé. Do spend some time here, before you head south for the ultimate tourist trap along the wine route, Riquewihr.
To be honest, I would try to avoid Riquewihr on a weekend, it is just so packed full. At least over the day, so keep in mind that both Ribeauvillé and Riquewihr have motorhome aires.
Many people finalise their wine tour in Colmar. However I would recommend to continue further south. This time the road has the number D83, and along it at least Eguisheim is well worth a visit. The onion-shaped old town is very scenic, and besides many less-known vineyards it is also the home of "Wolfberger", one of the most famous Alsacian wine makers.

I am hoping to spend a few nights in the area. The size of the motorhome could make some bits tricky though, so I will either get a cheapo hire car, or better still, try and book on a trip operated by a French coach operator.
The site at Obernai is an ideal stop for my journey to Italy and the area seems to offer too much to just be a one night halt.
