Hi

If as a UK citizen you have the right to reside anywhere in the EU, what is the necessity to do all the things people do when importing a MH into the UK? Why simply not bother to import it, especially if you are buyng a LHD and going to do a lot of, but not total, full-timing in Europe.

For instance:

You could the locally effective rate of VAT, sometimes cheaper than UK

Insure it in country of purchase.

Not do all the modifications required for by DoT for a UK taxed and insured vehicle.

Don't even think some EU countries have MOT rules.

I am sure all the new accession country domestic vehicles I see here are largely on the UK's roads most of the year and not subject to a plethora of modifications, road tax and UK insurance.

Seems to me we are just too damn compliance focussed, unlike our more laissez-faire cousins (no nation named, no pack-drill - but you know who you are johnny foreigners! lol)

Thoughts?

Because you need an address?

It has to be registered somewhere. If you want to take advantage of another country's lower VAT rate then you would need an address in that country. Along with that goes all your obligations then to pay local and national taxes etc etc.

Wouldn't that be great! An MOT every two years, cheap or non existent road fund licences and cheaper fuel. Ahh! To Dream ;Purchance to Live Free!
And all you need is a residence in the adopted country!
Sorry to burst the bubble, were it possible I'd be doing it. Actively looking for a job out of the UK. Rob

PS: If anyone has found a way please let me know ( as long as it is LEGAL) Thanks

I have the solution come and buy my villa , pay €95 every 2 years for a mot ,road tax is about €190,fuel i get from local orange growers cooperative €0.89 litre. And just to add insult to injury council tax on villa €180 p/a,water rates €160 p/a refuse collection €50 p/a collected every second day. 300 days of sunshine a year, its a hard life but someone has to do it.

We lived in France a while back. The inferences of actually claiming to live in a country mean that you have to import the vehicle (and if it's a UK made right hand drive you will be in for months of fun with the paperwork) and obeying their laws - passing a Controle Technique etc. You also have to insure it - and French motor insurance is VERY expensive.

Mind you, we met a guy who had dual nationality through having a French mother and South African father. His RV was registered in Jersey and insured in Belgium (where his girlfriend lived). He towed a car on an A-Frame and had been stopped a couple of times but when the police thought about the paperwork that was going to be involved (he would "forget" his fluent French and produce his South African passport) they waved him on his way.

Mmmmm! Just thinking of taking up dual nationality! quite fancy being Icelandic, not many cops speak that one do they!? But I understand the cost of living there is expensive and not much call for a woodworker( no trees) I can see me talking myself out of it as I type Exclamation Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Embarassed

so become resident in the country you by your LHD van in, if your virtually full-timing then you are not earning so negligible tax...there must be a way of doing this - maybe become a Romany?
