Hi silversurfa

Sorry but you are incorrect. VAT is charged on all used vehicles when sold by a person or company that is VAT registered.

You are also incorrect in the definition of a "used vehicle". The HMRC definition of a "used" vegicle (as opposed to a "New Means of Transport" ) is:

Over 6 months old AND covered more than 6000km.

Please read the following link.

We have had similar problems with Biere Reisemobile Hamburg not answering emails or phone call..or letters. Evil or Very Mad

The motor home was not ready for pick up when we arrived( we phoned them to arrange the date and time) even after it had been paid for. We had to wait for the whole day for it to be ready.

Found the whole business very inefficient and disapointing... but love our Mhome Very Happy

Now Still waiting fro VAT refund Sad Rolling Eyes

We bought in Belguim in December, we didn't have to pay Vat as the motorhome was over 6 months old, the dealer said only if the van was being sold on behalf of a business would we have to pay Vat, he said that would be very unusual, so I take it Belguim is different from Germany.

NO . you do not pay VAT on USED VEHICLE .

VAT IS PAID ONLY ONCE WHEN VEHICLE IS NEW.THE NEW OWNER PAYS THE VAT

THE EXCEPTION IS A VEHICLE THAT VAT HAS BEEN RECLAIMED ON THEN YOU AS THE 2ND BUYER PAY VAT ON THE PURCHASE PRICE.

YOU DO NOT PAY VAT ON A SECOND HAND VEHICLE IN GERMANY I REPEAT YOU DO NOT PAY VAT, I BUY FROM GERMANY .IF A GERMAN DEALER IS CHARGING VAT ON A USED VEHICLE ITS A RENTAL VEHICLE HE HAS CLAIMED VAT ON. YOU ARE THEN LIBLE FOR THE VAT. BUT YOU CAN'T CLAIM IT BACK. ONLY IF YOU ARE VAT REGISTERED CAN YOU CLAIM.

Hi silversurfa

Well firstly there's no need to "shout". Using all upper case in a post is considered rude.

The VAT situation on used vehicles can be complex but there will always be a VAT element in any used vehicle sold by a trader who is VAT registered as part of his business. From my understanding this may vary depending on the source, previous use of the vehicle, previous owner VAT status and dealer mark-up. In any event the amount of or presence of VAT is academic because the "windscreen" price will include that VAT element whether the vehicle is a "New Means of Transport" or not.

To reiterate, for a vehicle NOT to be considered a "New Means of Transport" it must have been "taken into use" at least 6 months before purchase AND have covered in excess of 6000km.

For a vehicle that is more than 6 months old AND has covered more than 6000km you pay the "windscreen" price which will contain a VAT element. You will not however be liable for any UK VAT on registration in the UK so in effect you will not pay any VAT.

For a vehicle that qualifies as a "New Means of Transport" you will still only pay the "windscreen" price but the dealer must provide two invoices, one for the net cost of the vehicle and one for the VAT element (currently 19%). On registration in the UK you must also pay UK VAT at 17.5% on the net cost invoice to HMRC and will be issued with a receipt. You should then provide a copy of that receipt to the supplying German dealer who is then obliged to refund the amount to you which is shown on the VAT receipt that he issued to you.

I trust that this clears up any misunderstanding.

I bought a new motorhome from Urbano in Belgium and only paid VAT in England(and they robbed us). Its how customs work it out they take the Price at the time you bought it, Not what you actually paid due to the Euro. We paid them £200 more than the wifes calculations.

Well, we went, we saw, but we did not conquer. Confused
Everyone at Palmowski was very nice - but very busy and it was difficult to get some personal attention. It's probably the time of year.
We also went to Brinkman at Braunschweig (about 100 miles away). They were much more attentive and although the salesman only spoke limited English we got on very well.
However, we decided that when you added it all up it seems that the savings were not going to be that great after all. The Euro-Pound rate has a lot to blame. Crying or Very sad
Still, onwards and upwards.
