I think this modem could be the same as the three one in the UK (Huawei E220)? does it have any referance to this company on the modem/paperwork/software??Wilse

There is no manufacturer name on the dongle - just 'Made in China' - but, apart from the colour (black) it is pretty much identical to the '3' dongle (and the WIND one). It also says it is an 'Edge' data card - so no HSPCA (?) connections - each connection I have made is at 460.8Kb. The reason you need the Auchan dongle (rather than a similar unlocked one) seems to be the software which comes with it. It's a bit like Compuserve or AOL in the old days; after connecting it directs your browser to your personalised page at the Auchan portal, from which you can click to go out the internet proper (or view your account details or recharge your card). The more technical may be able to get round this, but I haven't managed. And yes, the principle of the charging is xMB or y hours (whichever comes first) to be used within z days from first use. I think that, after the 'z' days are passed, you could add more credit to reactivate (because it initially takes you to a page where credit can be added, before allowing external surfing) but I'm sure that they would eventually terminate the Sim.

You need to add credit before the expiry date or you'll lose any unused credit. You can continue to top up and reactivate indefinitely but if you leave it for six months without adding credit the SIM will be deactivated and you'll lose the number. See my earlier post for more detail.

That is what I do not like about the French PAYG system. You have to make sure you top up before it expires and if back in UK and can't get back to France before end of 6 months! Seems expensive too 50mb for 5 hrs.

3 USB modem seems better value at 3Gb a month.

I like our PAYG phone system that you can top up as and when but doesn't matter how long you have credit on the phone so long as you make a call once every 3 months at least you do not get the sim deactivated. Now if they could have a PAYG system like that in France it would be great.
