If someone has helped me in any way, I thank them personally, but IMO the thanks system is a load of bunkum, and as much use as the Points or No. of posts being displayed.

All these are akin to performance targets, and have the inherent danger of becoming overimportant in themselves instead of just statistics of no real use.

I agree with you Rob, I would also add 'medals' to your list.
On the old site we used to get awarded "wheel hubs" depending on the number of posts.. this, IMO, led to a lot of pointless posts and was subsequently removed.

I've resurrected this thread to have a moan.

Like I said you can be thanked by some for the most trivial of reasons. But the other week someone asked a difficult question so I took half an hour to reply which involved a couple of searches to make sure my answer was as precise as I could give result ....nada, as far as I know the questioner didn't even return to read the answer. I have just cancelled the pm I sent in case the questioner just missed the reply, because it wasn't picked up (which is what reminded me). I'm sure I don't do it for the thanks, whether by a reply or click of the button but really ... moan moan ok moan over Smile

So:-

The ranks on Frank's thanks banks on Hank's tanks which stank (epsecially on Yanks) before they sank.

And yes, this is a load of w-offle.

Dougie.

I think it is common courtesy to thank someone when they've given you an answer to a question. Be that on the open forum, in a PM or via a "thanks" button. The method of thanking does not matter - the act alone is what is important.

Yes, the number of times folk get thanked can become meaningless ... but generally I think it is a nice system, especially if folk have been "a bit helpful" rather than "helpful beyond the call of duty" - in the second instance, a personal written thanks, however brief, is (IMHO) called for.

Its my day for resurrecting posts especially as I have ahem passed a small milestone.

Not blowing my own trumpet as I would point out (before anyone else does) that only about 1 in 20 of my posts seem to merit thanks a pretty poor average.

I did enjoy reading again the 2nd link in my first post and no lawyer has yet contradicted me Smile
