Next problem!! Wink

I have been trying to enter the longitude and latitude co-ordinates in my mapsource programme for my Garmin C510.

When I look up campsites on this forum, I enter these co-ordinates but mapsource says there is an error.

What is the correct way they should be typed in? Why do the co-ordinates shown for campsites in MHF not show N, S, E & W?

Can you help please?

Paul

I can't answer your specific Garmin problem but the coordinates in MHF campsites are derived from the Google map and thats the way google and many other mapping systems use coordinates ie in decimal degrees.

positive entries are N and E, negative numbers are S and W

You can convert between decimal degrees and degrees, minutes, seconds with a calculator or on one of many conversion websites, try this one

Hope this helps

Hi Frank,

I can alter my Unit to accept decimal degrees and thats the way it is at the moment. I can put co-ordiantes in my Mapsource program and they will work ( providing there is eg: N or E before the numbers. But the co-ordiantes on MHF have not got a Letter ( eg: N or E ) before the numbers.
I hope I am explaining this well? This is not really My thing but I would love to learn how this is done.

Hello again
Dont know what format your sat nav allows but there are 2 ways of expressing lats and longs

decimal degrees (ie 52.675423 deg)

or degrees minutes and seconds (ie 52' 40'' 55''' which means 52deg, 40mins and 55 seconds)

whatever format your sat nav is thats what you have to type it in as unless you can change the format on your sat nav. Otherwise as frank says you have to convert it yourself.

Just look at the options on Mapsource.

Lat/Lon hddd.ddddd*

Lat/Lon hddd*mm.mmm

Lat/Lon hddd*mm`ss.s"

Datum WGS 84

I have it set on the first which I believe is Decimal Degrees.

all you have to do in the case above

is put N054.61etc and W003.31etc (you omit the - sign)

for it to work (the leading zeroes may not be needed)

I think I have it Laughing

In the link Frank ( keeping well I hope? Smile ) gave me I entered some coordinates from a campsite in MHF and then converted them. In the conversion under GPS I entered these into my Garmin Mapsource program and it worked!!! I will play with it later when I get back from work.

Thanks All.

Paul
