I have a Sevylor and can definitely recommend it, great piece of kit and deflates really quite small if used with the pump as mentioned. They do tend to sit 'on' the surface of the water though and that's the issue for straight line tracking. Get a skeg and you will be fine (that's the small fin that attaches to the stern) They don't come fitted as standard because these things are supposed to be able to turn on the spot in rough water and one paddling option kind of contradicts the other! Hope this helps!

Hi,

once it is in the water, there is nothing better than a solid canoe. However, there is the trouble with transport. Easiest to transport is of course an inflatable, but here you have to accept some compromises in the water. I have had several Sevylors in the past and - having experience with solid canoes - was never really happy with them. Especially I was rather unimpressed with their handling under windy conditions.

I have tested a

some years ago (this is one category "above" the Helios), and that was already a much more satisfying experience. In my opinion Gumotex is almost as good as the (in my eyes) ultimate inflatable, the

, but considerably cheaper.

But between solids and inflatables there is one more kind not to be neglected, the folding canoe. Traditionally these were quite heavy, but modern folding canoes use aluminium frames and similar hull materials as inflatables, and can be even lighter than inflatables of similar capacity. It was because of the weight that I finally chose a

instead of the Gumotex, and I am really satisfied with it. There are other brands as well,

for instance. And, though at the top end of the price (and quality) range, "the mother of all folding kayaks" Wink ,

, still exists.

Best Regards,
Gerhard

I was just about to go find an inflatable canoe when I saw Boffs post so I think I am going to go for the same as he has got. Just hope it does not unfold while I'm using it. Sad

Nope... I think I am going for the Puffin which is the recreational craft on the Pakboat website. I think Boffs is ideal for circumnavigating the artic or trips up the Amazon so for fat Puss I just want one to dawdle around French lakes at 0600 in the morning. That will do me nicely and they are half the weight and I think half the price.
