I think I need an idiots guide Embarassed I have followed the on screen instuctions given with the gps re uploading to nuvi and copied and pasted as instucted. The problem is I cannot find the stellplatz poi's I downloaded from this site, should there be another icon on my nuvi to give me access to these? I have studied the forum and Garmin poi loader is referred to, where/what is this please?
Also converting files is referred to, sorry but I dont understand this either. I have put an SD card in the nuvi and it is connected to my PC. Any information at all to get me started with POI would really be appreciated. We are off to Black Forest and then France at the beginning of May.

Thanks in advance

Hi,

I'm only starting to get to grips with my nuvi but maybe I can help a little.

POI loader is a little program which you need to download from the Garmin website. Once installed, it will ask you for a source file (say a POI file from MHF), and a destination location, which will be a) your nuvi, if connected direct by a USB to your PC or b) your SD card, if plugged into a card reader.

Note that the POI loader program only accepts one or two file formats, but most POI files are available in either TOMTOM or Garmin(csv) format.
If you can't obtain the correct format, thats where the POI converter comes in, but Thats beyond my field of expertise, I'm afraid.

Once the POIs are transferred to the nuvi, they can be found under EXTRAS>CUSTOM POIs.
Note that the addition of extra POIs (say if you have french aires and then add Stellplatz) does not create an extra category, - they are all lumped together under CUSTOM POIs.

Hope this helps, but please understand that these are only my observations - I don't actually know what I'm talking about.........

If you still have probs, ask again.

Regards,

Glenn.

PS - Black forest in May ????? - You lucky sod!!!!!

Glenn,

Those instruction sound great to me but  I'm lost.

I've just invested in a Garmin Nuvi 350 (had a 250) but I'm finding it very difficult to find my way around it.

If any Garmin 350 owner has an hour to spare one evening at the Peterborough Show and would be willing to help me get acquainted with the machine I would be very grateful.

The general method for getting POI's onto a Nuvi are as follows.

1.Install POIloader onto your PC, available from Garmin's website.
2. Establish which format of POI's that you wish to install. For Garmin, they need to be Garmin format, or csv. Normally, the website from where you are obtaining them will make this clear.
3. If your chosen PI's are not available in the correct format, eg TomTom, you can download POIEdit from the web. This will enable you to convert from eg TomTom to Garmin format.
4. Create a folder on your PC called something like "files for my Nuvi" (It doesn't matter what it is called - just remember it!).Download your chosen POI files onto you PC - into this folder.
For each category of POI's there will be at least two files. One with an extension, probably csv, which is the data, and another with the same file name, but with a bmp (bitmap) extension. This is the icon that will appear on your map. Without it, you won't see your POI!
5. Connect your Nuvi to your PC, and run POIloader. It will ask where your files are located (you've remembered where they are haven't you?). It will then load them for you.

They will appear on your nuvi as custom POI's.

THIS IS IMPORTANT! If you have other custom POI files that you wish to keep - you need to reload these from the same folder, at the same time - POIloader overwrites as it loads

Good luck with it - it is more straightforward than it sounds! PM me if you get stuck

Hi
tell me where you are so far
If your still having trouble your not on your own. I have a 350 too.

Garmin doesnt have many pois in its own format but you can use tom tom pois providing you convert them to .GPX format. The garmin loader wont convert them for you and you will probally have an error mesage if you do.

As the previos poster said any poi files have to all be in the same folder each time you load any. You cant just say "load the pois in a perticular folder which is different each time"

So first you have to convert the stellplatz files to .gpx (garmin proxinity point). You can load a POI converter off tinternet.

So you have to folder on you pc with the .gpx files in it. Call it master poi folder or summat similar.
Connect the 350 to the pc and run poi loader
Tell it where the GPX files are (browse to the folder master poi list)

That should be it.
To veiw them look in custompPOIS

Phill

Thanks Phill,

If I get it all wrong I'M concerned I might loose all the maps in the 350. I'm very reluctant to experiment.

The main problem is I don't understand some of the terminology.

I just don't have any experience to sort it if I foul up.

Hi there

I'd offer help, but being in Portugal it's not easy Smile

I've got Nuvi 350 & 360, and what I do for custom POI's is this:

Make a folder on desktop called 'poi' save CSV's and supporting BMP image (if you need to) into folder. I have McDonalds_FR, Aires, etc.

Then use POI loader to load the 'poi' folder

Once you've done this you will have seperate entries for each category.
If you removes the 'aires' CSV and re-upload the 'poi' folder then the 'aires' category will be removed.

If you keep the poi folder up to date with what you want, you will have no problems.

If you are still stuck I will send you PM of my UK moby number.
You are free to call me I will help if I can.

All very interesting but where do we get worthwhile POIs? Any URLs or pointers would be appreciated especially re Aires.

Still trying to work out how this 760 works completely but love it so far.
