Hi, when we were driving back from Spain in January, I filled up twice in France, once I used my Nationwide debit card and the other my MBNA credit card. Both were accepted without question/problem. These were both in the shops of main road/motorway service stations and not automatic machines but I can't see there would be a problem.
Hope this helps
Regards Paul

Whilst in France last year on the motorbike there was no problem getting fuel on a UK card from manned fuel stations. We had a few scary moments at the unmanned machine only stations as they would not accept any card other than French ones which we didn,t have. Our experience was that most off highway fuel stations are not manned at weekends especially Sundays.

I stand corrected, there probably is a problem with the machines (thanks Jede) , stick with dealing with people and you wont have a problem.

The vast majority of Staffed stations, be it in the countryside, towns cities or motorways accept Worldwide Credit Cards, some Amex (Most Total usualy accept Amex).
The problems arises with older 24/24 automated stations that can only accept French cards. This is slowly changing and as an example Auchan Supermarket at La Grande Synthe, Dunqurque can accept UK Credit Cards.
Best to fill up when you can and if you see a Supermarket selling cheap fuel under the 24/24 sign, give it a go.
Let us all know how you go on.

I used both credit and debit cards 2 weeks ago in France. We always fuel at the supermarkets as they are the cheapest. Fuel varied between 1.22 and 1.38 euros, the 1.38 being on the motorways. At 1 euro = 80p its getting expensive.
If you can use a Nationwide card as you dont get charged for using it in France. My bank charged Ģ2.00 per transaction.
We use 3 mobile phones and were very impressed with how cheap they were to use in France and to the UK
