Well maybe fridge problem. Our old fridge had a wee green light to tell you whether it was on and working. This one doesn't have that. Just wondering if there is an easy way to check whether it is on and working. Obviously going cold would be one way but as van is baltic anyway not helping. It's just that we suspect it isn't working properly on EHU or 12 volt. Never seems to be very cold. So can I listen for a noise?? Would there be heat from a vent or something??

Hi Carol

We have the same setup as you but I have had no need to root around for the charger, etc, yet. However, on our last van, a CI, a lead had come loose on the charger. I pushed it in firmly and applied a cable tie. Never had another problem. Perhaps it is something as simple as this?

As you know, I am in work, so cannot check it out for you.

Tim

Hi,

one of the advantages of absorber fridges like yours is that they operate totally silent. So nothing to listen for. On the other hand, there should always be a significant amount of heat coming out of the upper outside vent. If that is not the case, then something is wrong.

Does it work good on gas?

Best Regards,
Gerhard

Hi Carol/Gavin,

It may be possible to feel some heat generated by the fridge by using a sensitive part of your body (eg face) next to the external vent. It should feel slightly warm.

I bought a small temperature sensor from Aldi. One part sits in the freezer the other in the fridge or caravan bit. It only take one AAA battery and lets you know the temperature at all times. I think it was about £6 but that was some time ago.
The sensor in the freezer usually shows about -14C on gas or mains but rises to about -12C when using 12V after a long journey.
The fridge part usually shows about +9C.

It is good to see the temperature dropping when the freezer is first turned on. and it even bleeps when the temp reaches freezing, this can be turned off if required. It also has a max/min hold so you can see if the freezer has malfunctioned whilst you were away.

The freezer sensor is connected to the main unit by a very thin cable that can easily be fed in through the door seal. I know that that may sound like it introduces an escape route for the cold air but it is so minor that it is not noticeable. You can always remove it once you have confirmed satisfactory operation.

The unit was intended to give frost warning when driving - most cars have this fitted as standard but it is ideal in this situation.

OR...

You could just put a thermometer in the fridge!

Hi guys have done the heat test on outside vent and there is a teeny bit of heat. Battery stilll only at 10amps but not going down. Campbells were very helpful when I called and suggested checking trip switches etc all are fine and fuses look to be intact.
We are just going to head off and hope for the best. Going to charge battery on car charger for a couple of hours see what happens.
Like the idea about the wee fridge thermometer so will invest in one of those.
Wish us luck!!! Going to Park of Brandedleys in Dumfries so not too far away!!!

Intrigued by your phrase "van is baltic ". No idea what it means!

I assume that you mean battery reads 10 VOLTS, not amps.

That does seem low, it should be 12V to 14V when on charge.

However, you fridge should not work on 12V unless the ignition is on as there is a relay to prevent the battery being drained.
