Hi all I am just getting into the sat tv game, we don't usually bother but as our trips are going to get longer I thought I would get one of the Maplins suitcase jobbies.
Now I have read on here that some of you are using the sucker thingies (don't know what they are called) that are normally used to transport glass panels by hand to holdthe dish onto the van.
I have an idea of how it is done by inserting a pole through the handle, but are you sticking to the side of the van as opposed to the roof?
And have you had any problems getting a signal?
I ask because my mate who has used the suitcase type found that he could never get a signal when sticking dish to side of van.
His van is a Swift with GRP sides mine is a Hymer van with I think ally sides.
I haven't tried it yet still waiting for dish to arrive and my mate has given me his tripod just in case (he has now got a crank up).
Comments from users of the suckers most appreciated as the tripod is quite large and the suckers nie and small.
Pete

The type of van should make no diffrance. The only advantage of roof mounting will be you might get over tress etc if req. You can mount a dish to anywhere as long as you get a clear view of the sky with it.

Hello Pete,
Been down the same road as you and your mate from the sound of things. You will find the crank-up very hard to beat and you may end up fitting one.

But not with suckers, eh Trev.
Have to agree, the crank-up seems really excellent, though I can't use mine at present due to a self inflicted disaster that I'm trying to forget.
The biggest advantage I anticipate is all that twiddling in the warm and dry, rather than outside for ages in a freezing gale with rain and sleet up your kilt.
Not that there is much twiddling with a crank-up. I only used mine once before the catastrophe (which I'm still trying to forget ) but it took less than three minutes to get locked onto a good strong signal.
If your Hymer has the rippled aluminium sides I am sure the suction cups won't 'stick'. The surface will have to be smooth, like GRP. Just a thought...

Hi Pete
I use my double sucker to hold the flag pole against the van when I am using the ladder to attach the wind generator. It holds a 9 meter fishing pole in the strongest of winds and does absorb all of the vibration noise.
If you want one of these lifting devices go to Screwfix the are Ģ4:99 they also have a treble version for a few quid more.. But do inspect the rubber pads before you leave the store as some of them may have been damaged and wont allow a vacuum.
Kind regards
