To clarify, there is no one company offering free internet access across France. Several franchises currently offer free wireless internet at some or most of their establishments. It consists of a network with a limited range and you have to connect to the network using an encryption code. There are stories of some networks not being secure and this would allow you to connect from your van outside.

Consider your own wireless network at home, if you have one. You should encrypt it otherwise an unscrupulous individual can connect using your network.

I understand that the aim is for this country, and presumably most of Western Europe to have wireless internet access points in the community. However, this is a long way off.

We had a terrible fight last night.....my wife asked me what was on the TV and I said "dust".

I treat every day as if it was my last. One day i will be right.

Hi!

Can you give me more info on this. Is the access code somehow universal all over France ? What is the name of the company offering the access ?

The access code - as in a password- is given to you by the campsite office or the tourist information bureau and gives you free access to the network that the municipality provide. It changes from place to place and is peculiar to that town or village. I have no idea whether each French town, city or village uses the same internet provider or whether they all have separate provision. We have used free internet in our van or, memorably, sitting in the village square with the laptop in many cities, towns and villages throughout France and we have no dongle or subscription to any wifi provider.

We collect our e-mail via webmail ( Virgin - ex NTL) and use Skype a lot to make phone calls. We recognise that the network might not be secure so do not do any internet banking etc. Anyone who accesses our e-mails would be bored to bits as they would by our phone calls.

We have not noticed it advertised but we always ask and are seldom disappointed. We don't use McDonalds or commercial outlets.
