We are looking or advise on towing a smart car. We have been put off by the A frame mainly due to clutch problems etc.
We have decided that if we did buy one we want a smart car. The problem we would like answered is that as we have our motorhome stored at caravan park, where there is no room to store the trailor. What we would like answered is can the smart car tow it's own trailer?
We would need to tow the trailer back to our home base and store it in our garage, so we really need some advise before we proceed. In addition could you could also advise us on towing with motorhome as my partner worries about reversing in a Mersades.
I would imagine,as long as you canfit a bar to the car. The trailer should fit in the weight limits, but I may be wildly out in my assumptions.

Although the latest brochure says nothing about towing limits, there's a range of towbars on offer

Unless there as been recent changes, the Smart Fourtwo is not approved for towing in the Uk. However there is a tow bar available. If you intend to purchase a new smart I would check with the dealer first.
With regard to reversing, with a little practise you should not have any problems.
Just check your towing weight on the motorhome.
Have fun Roy

We have checked recently re 2 cars; the Smart range and the Citroen C1, neither of these have a type approved tow bar and for UK all tow bars must meet type approval specification. i.e. you cannot legally tow with either a Smart or a Citroen C1. I believe this comes under the "Construction and Use Regulations" but this probably follows a European Directive (most of our laws seem to nowadays).
You can get tow bars to fit but they are designed for on-bar mounted bike carriers and NOT for a tow ball. Sorry to say this but if you did tow you would probably invalidate your insurance as it does not meet normal manufacturers specifications. Insurance companies have been known to find a get-out clause if one exists!
