This is not wild camping in the sense that most people understand and reasonable answers were given to explain this. I see no reason to descend into rudeness.

Most lay by's are full of HGV's by the early evening, police never seem to move them on. On the A34 between Didcot and Abingdon heading north, they often park on the side of the road in a section of the hardshoulder that is wider than normal - not even a lay by.

If you find a space between the HGV's its unlikely you will be moved on. Main problem here would be safety.

When you say a "safety issue" being parked near HGVs, do you mean a personal safety issue because you think the drivers are likely to rob you or that you might get your van squashed! The only issue with parking near lorries I have come across is if one turns up with a refridgerated trailer. They are so noisy!

If you are near lorries and are woken by someone trying to get in your van then just sound your horn long and loud. Someone will deffo come to see what's going on, even if it is just to tell you to shut up because they are trying to sleep!

We don't full time yet, by this time next year we will be though! But we have parked near trucks before and been perfectly fine. They are driving thousands of pounds worth of vehicle, never mind the load value, and don't want dodgey people hanging around anymore than you do.

I know the A34 on this stretch very well and I would not stop my car on any of these laybys to be honest. I certainly would not overnight there in a motorhome.

Nothing to do with being robbed but everything to do with being a horrible stretch of road on which accidents happen every day. The road itself is not wide enough ( 2 lane ) for all the traffic it carries - much of it HGVs. It runs at capacity day and night and getting into and out of the laybys is bad enough without spending the night terrified that someone will run into the back of you and being deafened with the noise.

Get off the road and go up onto the Ridgeway where there are numerous little laybys where, if you are discreet, you will be left alone for a night and have magnificent views.

As an ex lorry driver I would not have any safety issues with a layby on a busy trunk road like the A34 but the noise would put me right off!

My partner and I have never had a problem finding a nice secluded place to park where nobody is troubled, but the problem is they are usually nowhere near civilisation. The ones among us that need to earn a living, need to be fairly close to work and that will often mean Cl's etc.

This summer we are going to be spending most of our time trading at music festivals around the country, but in between times we will be wild camping where possible for the peace and solitude.

We have three solar panels totalling 200 watts and 3 batteries totalling 330 amps, refillable lpg and a chemical free loo with spare cassette to make site visits less necessary.

Isn't this all about consideration for other people? If you parked outside my house, I would have a problem, who are you? how long you staying? etc. but knock on my door, ask if I mind you parking for one night and your no longer a problem, probably ask if you wanted to empty your tanks or fill with water. We stay in quite a few truck stops, both at home and here while touring. And we are quite comfortable in the CLEAN ones. We are well insulated so we do not hear much activity around us, but....

Last night we stayed in a small truck parking area that charged only 2 pounds for 24 hours. There was a dual rear-axle Euro motorhome and a very large caravan also parked together with people in two very nice 4-wheel drives. After they left, a couple of truck drivers reported that their batteries missing and pointedly noted them. So I guess if parking in non-campsite areas one needs to be a lot more diligent.

Frankly speaking, if they are unclean, messy, unsafe or too crowded, we will find another place.

If your wife is a locum nurse would the hospital she is working in at the time let you park up somewhere in the grounds if they have anywhere suitable?
I seem to remember something like this happening wen I was working at Broomfield hospital in Chelmsford a few years ago.
Not sure of the exact circumstances but I think we had an emergency admission who then needed to stay for several weeks, anyway there was a medium sized motorhome containing their partner tucked into a quiet corner of the grounds with an electrical hook up via a very long lead provided by the hospital engineers.
Might be worth asking!

Parking of motorhomes prohibited all along Seaford ( east sussex) esplanade. Absolutley verboten and a 60 quid fine if you do.

No guesses how I found out, Embarassed

and I live opposite where it was parked.
