The Hymer is a good van but with a 1.9 you aint going anywhere quick. A mate of mine has a CI with a 1.9 (this is a lighter van) and he struggles to keep 60 on the M way.

we had a good look at a 1.9 and was very close to buying before backing off,now owning a hymer 544 with a 2.5 tdi I'm very glad we did.... Each to their own me thinks but about 90% of all feedback from all forums I posted on asking the same question as you came back as don't go there....
Good luck, there's loads of vans out there

I had a '96 Hymer 494 with a 1.9td engine. Certainly didn't break any speed records but was very reliable. Travelling on French motorways she'd go 60-65mph all day long. Up hill was a struggle at times, yep sometimes around the 30mph, and the turbo had an annoying whistle most of the time.

Depends how fast you want to drive. I have the same, it crawls on some autovia hills but we not in rush , just relax better for your health , you will learn how Drive it ? .

i have a 19td and you need to keep the revs up so change down sooner on hills and it well stay with m/way speeds (70ish) and it returns around 25mpg but most m/h do about the same +/- 5 depending on your right foot the wind and the load ie no of people full tanks roof boxes and the like

We also have this engine with 515 Euramobil and it is not the most powerful. 100Kph is about as fast a we go, but can be a lot less on hills but changing down early helps....never let it get under 2000rpm and you will be ok....

If you have never driven a camper especially an older one like the one you are thinking on buying, I would say when you do take it down the first windy road you will not need even the 1.9td's modest power....they tend to handle a lot different to a car.....

Before anyone comes on saying theres handles like a car, save it, I have drive more than one van, transit, ducato, iveco, sprinter and none handle like a car even before you get the camper stuck on the back.

I would not be put off a 1.9td but it is what it is?
