The problem with SP3 not recognising 4gb RAM is a known issue:

A lot of reading but, as I understand it, XP 32bit will not recognise 4gb ram.
64bit does, however, and from all accounts, runs much quicker than Vista. A post in the reply likens Vista with 4gb to running XP with 2gb.
Thank you for that. I do remember sometime ago problems with XP and 2gb but I am sure it was reporting 4gb as I cannot believe I have not looked at the reading in all this time. But hey, I am old and getting more stupid by the day so it is entirely possible. Now thinking where to go next.

A staggering number of everyday programs will not run under it.
Including DOS- my historic DOS accounts going back 15 years? - Zilch!
Antivirus? The only one with 64bit capability is AVAST! - all the other household names? Nada!
Scanners? You'll be lucky!
And so the list goes on.....
I agree, to some extent, however, your info may be out of date as AVG is available for the 64bit platform.

I have got most things working on my PC with 64bit XP running.
However, I was merely pointing out the fact that 64bit recognises the full RAM capacity. If the option was to go out and buy a 64bit XP or Vista, I would plump for Vista. Or, live with the reduced RAM.
I cannot live knowing I have only 3gb of ram so Vista here I come. Thank you for all the time and trouble explaining it to me.

I am sure it WAS reading 4gb. The problem appears to manifest itself with the update to SP3.

Vista (32 bit) can only see 3GB of RAM. You need the 64 bit version for 4GB or more...
I have found that provided you use the latest hardware Vista is stable so only put it on a new machine.
Oh, I've been using Vista (Business and Ultimate) for well over a year now and it still drives me to distraction I have restorted to installing Virtual PC with XP to do the things that Vista can't do properly or won't do thanks to those shortsighted pr&ts in the RIAA.

As far as I know 32 bit versions of Vista have the same memory problems as Xp in that they cannot fully address 4GB. Vista service pack 1 has altered the way that the amount of memory is reported. People with 4gb were only shown with 3 - 3.5.
Apart from the fact that Vista takes twice the power to do what XP does it looks very nice.
Clean install of XP and upgrade to XP sp3 - you know it makes sense.
Regards
Herman

Many thanks and I suspect you are right. I have just had another bizarity with Svc pk 3. All my outlook express subfolders have either disappeared up their own backside or have become folders in their own right.
I have ordered a ready made box with Vista on it and while I am waiting I will do what you have said as having got Vista on a laptop I much prefer XP anyday of the week. I think I may simply go to svc pack 2 as I was happy with that. No issues and I know then I can find my cloaking device parts and time warp components so I can really thrash some aliens.
