I think the time has come to surround the shores of Burma with aircraft carriers and as many planes as they can muster and tell the generals that they will face genocide charges or something similar to war crimes if they do not get their act together. Of course intervention will cause problems but it cannot get any worse than it is now. COme on Gordon - make the difficult decisions you keep harping on about. Let us at least see one.

Apparently, after a week of negatiation by the NGO's. the government of Burma has allowed some aid to be brought in.

How decent of them, in a way, this could be construed as a good thing. Presumably the aid wont have to go as far.

should have told George W, that there's terrapins in the country.

Rumour has it, when he was discussing the prospect of invading a country,
2 were suggested.

he chose Iraq, and Saddam, 'cos he couldnt pronounce

zimbabwe and Mugabe.

I think it may have started as a joke, but listening to the great leader of the western world, it wouldn't actually surprise me.

I'm assuming that very few, if any, world leaders search these forums for helpful advice, but I'm wondering whether or not any other users of these forums have done anything which might help a real live Burmese person in Burma right now?

I believe the title of this post will end up as the understatement of the year.

Smilo, bit confused... short of donating money, and writing to the Government what else CAN we do please?

I can't physically go there as I am sole carer for my parents reaching 90 years old and both physically ill. I am sure that a lot of people have done what they can. It is a sad fact that life has to go on as normal for the rest of the world and I really admire those that are able to get off their backside and physically go and do something. But the rest of us can only do our best, nothing more.

Sorry if my English not good. Really tired as just come in from my charity work night for other desperate people. The world is full of them and we can't help everybody much as it would be wonderful to do so. If this sounds ratty sorry, it isn't meant to. I am just exhausted. Joy

Joy, this is, I think, one of those very rare occasions when writing to MPs might not be quite as useful or important as it often is. Our MPs do seem to be saying the right things and slowly ensuring that some of the right things are done.

I was simply wondering whether or not any MHFers had themselves donated any money, or time and work, towards reducing the awful impacts of the cyclone in Burma, and whether or not they were prepared to say so.

I haven't, at least directly. And I am not sure I will send any money until I know a general is not going to be the beneficary. It appears to be an odd situation where there is hundreds of tons of aid available and no one to use it.
