Today Mr. Darling starts paying me, rather than me paying Mr. Darling. For this landmark birthday, my little brother sent me a book called

The little book of Essential Foreign Swear Words by Emma Burgess.

Most of it is quite unsuitable for this forum, liberally broadminded as I know you all are (except Pusser......!) but here is one of the milder samples:

French Si vous etiez deux fois plus intelligent, vous seriez encore stupide.

German Und wenn du doppelt so schlau waerst, waerst du immer noch doof.

Italian Se fossi due volte piu intelligente, saresti ancora stupido.

Spanish Si fueras el doble de inteligente, aun serias estupido.

Most of the insults are available, as above, in the (other) four main European languages but there are some choice expletives in thirteen other languages, so if you meet an Arabic-speaking Serb in Portugal you can insult him three times over.

Try this one on a stroppy site warden: Du hast das Hirn eines Kaesebroetchens........

Dr (musical, not medical) Roy

Does the book have English translations?

I would not want to upset my Greek Godmother by inadvertantly using a totally inappropriate phrase in Czech when I take her on holiday to Turkey.

I thought every member of MHF was multi-lingual! Yes, all the insults have Anglo-Saxon translations. There is even one English vulgarity, translated into the four languages, which I didn't know, but for fear of it being really rude I daren't ask forum members for an explanation!
