Joking aside, our 15" LCD is rated at about 40 watts. Very low consumption.

Jock
If you divide your watts, 40, by your volts, 12, it gives you your amps
I reckon about 3.3333333333333333 amp Cool

Still very low though. Our 15"LCD is about 75w or 6.25amp. It's a BEKO
from Argos. A 12v thru a 240v dropper (supplied with TV) We run it thru a 150w inverter and it works fine for us.

Apologies folks,

As DJP quite rightly points out, the TV is about 75 watts, (not 40 watts Embarassed ) which we run permenantly from 12 volt. We use the feed from the old analogue satellitte receiver, with no interferance whatsoever from any other 12 equipment.

The 240 volt Sky box is nearer 40 watts (remembered now Rolling Eyes ) which we run through the inverter.

A friend of ours uses a small 12 volt LCD TV in his caravan, and everytime his wife operates the water pump, the thing switches off. Crying or Very sad

Jock.

Hi dennis

I do not fully understand electricity and can only go on my own experiences. I have spoken with other motorhomers with the big old 14" TV's who tell me they can only leave theirs on for 3 or 4 hours.

Usually our battery will commence life at 13.8 volts. We'll watch TV in the evening with maybe one or two small lights on which burn say 1 amp. Occasionally the pump will be run or the heater fan may cut in.

In our Hymer B584 the red battery warning light comes on at 11.8 volts so, as I stated in my post, the battery has run down in 2-3 hours from 13.8 volts to 11.8 volts. How long would that take at say a consumption of 3.5 amps for the TV and say 2 amps for the lights and other bits?

Surely its not practical stating that an 85 amp hr battery will run for 24 hours at 3.5 amps. I'm guessing that the battery would not be much use after that as it will have been drained completely, or am I wrong?

Please help put me right here.

Thanks folks

Hi Brimo,

The ordinary (tube) 14" colour TV does drain the battery as they use a lot of power, whereas, the modern LCD TV's ise a lot less.

Whilst we had our caravan with only one battery, we stuck with the old portable black and white TV due to the lower power consumption. An essential factor to consider when you are not on mains hook up.

Hope this helps,

Jock.

If i buy a 'std' 240v lcd tv can i safely use it with an inverter ( albeit a modified sine wave version ) ?

Trying to research which tv to buy is almost as problematic as finding a new van.

Can anyone tell me where i can buy the adapter to convert the cigar plug from the fat uk version into the apparently thinner versions fitted to my EuraMobil

i have tried searching for continental power adapters on the net but just get sites listing the 2 pin mains plug types.

Thanks
Mark

Yes Mark, you can use an invertor. We originally powered the Sky box and the LCD TV through the invertor without any problems. We use a 300watt invertor.

Can't help with the European cigar lighter plugs though.

Mark, faced with a similar wrong plug problem I snipped it off, note the polarity, then rewired to a uk cig type (helps being a hoarder, I had one lurking in the garage Wink )
