Hello All!

We are just about to set off on a 5month surfing and windsurfing trip around France, Spain and Portugal and cant wait! We bought ourselves a trailer to store all our boards since they are so long they dont fit in/on the camper very easily!
We wondered how we would be received at campsites with the trailer, and so welcome any comments from those of you who have toured with a trailer or towing a car, did you have any problems getting on to sites? As for length our camper is 7m, and the trailer is 4m, so 11m in total. We know our trailer would fit in our awning (just) so I'm thinking if any sites were awkward about the trailer, could we get away with just hiding it in the awning?!

Thanks in advance!

No idea about Europe, but I've never had any problems in Britain. My van and trailer are shorter than yours, but no one has ever questioned it. I was asked if I had gas cylinders in it at the site I'm on now, but that's the first time. And it makes a good pitch marker when I go out in the van!

Don't think it will be a problem
On our recent trip to France/Spain/Portugal saw lots of Motorhomes both towing cars on trailers or small covered trailers.
The only problem you could have is manoevering on some of the smaller sites as some of the turns can be quite tight, you may need to unhitch the trailer then "walk" it to your pitch.
You may need to give some thought to security though, while it is unlikely that you would have problems on a campsite can you secure the contents inside the trailer and can you secure the trailer to the van in some way so it cannot be removed if you wildcamp or make an unscheduled overnight stop somewhere.

It shouldn't be a problem. Some sites in Europe will charge you. Most will let you keep it on your pitch if you can get it on if not they may have a place to park it - rarely they might insist on it being put somewhere else other than the pitch. Take care if you park up 'on the road' for an overnighter - don't use motorway aires you might end up with an empty trailer or loss of trailer altogether - keep it chained on to the MH.

Thanks for the reassuring replies; just the type of thing we wanted to hear! Worst case was to be told we were being crazy etc.! As you have pointed out, security is something we need to be aware of, and so have devised several security devices to ensure the trailer will be locked to the van at all times, along with a wheel clamp etc.
I am sure we may come across the odd site where it could be an issue, but as long as we are accepted at the majority we will be happy!

We jacked in our jobs to pursue this dream trip, thanks for taking the time to reply!!

Hi

It should not be a problem. Only the same as taking a tow car - and that has never caused me a headache in terms of pitching.

You sound just like us!
We left the U.K on 3rd October 2007 and returned on 10th April 2008 having spent our time in France Spain and Portugal.
The only problem is that the dream trip is going to become much more of a way of life as we enjoyed it so much!
Since returning to the U.K we have started sorting out 20 years worth of accumulated " stuff" so we can radically downsize our property and upsize our van ( we only have a 6m long drive) and spend more time abroad!
Long term motorhoming can be seriously addictive

Have a great trip, hope you had as much fun as we did.

Rapide - thanks for that, looking at your avatar your MH looks quite long too, so its all good reassurance!

Marionandrob - great to hear from people in a similar boat and thought process to us! If you have the time I would love to know any reccomendations for good places to stop, i.e campsites or just things that are worth seeing. We have 5 weeks to go down the west coast of france, then we cross over and drive down the east side of spain, arriving in Guardamar for a family party, then after that we're just gonna head where the road takes us...along with our boards!
Good luck with clearing the house...we've already rented ours out, so who knows what the next step will be!!! Very Happy Smile

Have a long list of places and campsites.
Do you have a link for private messages then i can send you the info direct and avoid putting a very long post on the forum!

Oh yes a tip, keep a journal or else you will very quickly forget where you have been, I managed to fill one and a half Moleskine journals while we were away.
