I have been living in France for last five years and while there purchased a Motor Home, I am now living in Essex and will need to Register it here, can anybody please help me with what I need to do and where I will have to go, the Motor Home is a 2001 model so do the lights alter, or what do I need to do, at the moment we only intend holidaying on the continent. Help would be really appreciated.

I think the first thing to do would be to mot the van on the French plates and you can then apply for registration from your local dvla office.
I had beam deflectors on my German van when It was first mot'd and it passed with flying colours.

Good luck

Hi Snowey, We imported our LHD Hymer B510 over 2 years ago, we never bothered to change the lights as we motorhome mostly in France, and it has always passed the mot. You will have to contact your local DVLA office to reregister, they may wish to inspect your motorhome or not? Hope this helps.

Morning Snowey

I would say the answer to your question is, not all mot garages etc have the equipment for motorhomes, you will need to find mot that can take the weight of the motorhome, commercial premises, at least that is what we found. hope that helps.

You need to have it MOT'd first, then Insured on the French number/chassis number.

The MOT station needs to be able to lift the whole thing on ramps. so you need to find one that can, also, length of the MOT station brake tester is critical.

Once you have the MOT, insurance and the title/certificate of ownership, go ye to your nearest DVLA office, have a look at the DVLA website for this and the appropriate form. Complete form, hand over either 38 or 55 quid, with the money for your VEL, and wait 5 working days, you will then get your VEL and V5 so you can take the V5 and passport/driving licence and get your plates made up.

HAve a look at the HMRC website for " personal import of used vehicles from the Europe, " this will give details of documentation required for you to keep it in the UK

DVLA dont measure motorhomes from European manufacturers, since the laws over there are the same regarding size.
