Hi all,

My Norton antivirus is about to run out and I have been told to install AVG 8.0, is this a good product ?

How do I remove Norton from the computer and do I do it before or after installing AVG

symantec is the program to look for when uninstalling, I believe that there is a Norton removal tool for doing so.

Can't help with the Norton info - damn stuff is worse than a virus! but the AVG stuff is really good, we've used it at work for years & never had any issues.

Remove Norton before installing AVG

You can remove Norton by using the uninstall option, or by going to the Symantec Website and downloading the Norton Removal Tool. This may be the best bet to ensure as much of the prog as possible are removed. If you use the tool, follow the instructions carefully.
After removal, go into the Add/Remove Programs folder and if it is there remove "Live Update" (I'm not sure if the Removal Tool will also uninstall this).

Some people have had problems with AVG 8 while othere report it as being O.K. The alternatives are to either install AVG 7.5 for a few months until AVG 8 has been (hopefully) debugged, or use a different Antivirus such as Avast Antivirus.

After uninstalling Norton, and before installing an new Antivirus, restart the computer and close as many running programs as possible

AVG 8 is a really good program, but the one bug I have found is that it doesnt get on too well with Internet Explorer 7. There is a bug which will not allow you to print directly from webpages without switching off the IE protected mode. I'm sure they will sort it out soon though!

This can be a pig to remove all traces especially from the registry and I would never use it for this reason avg 8 is fine I have used it for years without any problems.

Check here for the removal procedure from symantec follow it carefully.

First thing I do with a new PC is remove the dreaded Norton and install a decent AV product.

Some years ago I discovered that the Norton firewall had backdoors for certain spyware. I've never touched anything Symantec since.

Agree totally about Norton - it does not protect "like ti says on the packet" in our experience. We had it all properly paid for, used it and then decided to try AVG, it picked up lots of problems that Norton had ignored - some of whuch were potentially serious.

AVG works well, we have not encountered the glitch reported but are well prepared to accept that it exists - such glitches often depend on a whole variety of other, unrelated programmes.

Avast also is highly recommended, there are lots of different packages available. We use Sophos on our network.

Good luck with removal of Symantec's Norton - the only programme that we have found harder to install is the one linked to AOL which we first started using when we first started. After switching several times, and uninstalling it, it would still surface every now and then! Fooled it in the end - we changed computers!

Yet another one who concurs, never install Norton because you will never be able to get rid of it all. As Kelcat says its like a hidden virus...
