Thanks for the links as I had no idea it had that kind of history to it. Bader was a schoolboy hero of mine. A true hero and such tenacity in the face of adversity.

Ed
The base started life as a bomber training base for Commonwealth air crews during the war. It was taken over as a rocket motor development establishment by the then Ministry of Aviation who named it R.P.E. Westcott (rocket propulsion establishment) for most of its government life until it was finally 'down graded' to a Royal Ordnance Factory before being finally closed a few years ago. During the sixties regular sonic 'booms' were generated there as part of the testing process in the development of Concorde. I don't think Bada had anything to do with the place
The area is huge and so the use of outdoor areas for storage could be a cheaper possibility.

The Bader bit was Pussers joke which I got but it did remind me of what a hero Bader was and I digressed. Didn't the Germans confiscate his artificial legs in Colditz to stop his escape attempts?
'Reach for the skies' still stands the test of time as a great film. Kenneth Moore (?) was good in it.
However, back to topic..... hangar was ideal as it can be secured easily whereas open ground would likely need fencing etc erected which would require capital for a start up company. No sign of them trying to rent the open ground but could always enquire.
Getting back to the topic, I used to store my motorhome at Gibbons Farm, near Stokenchurch. He doesn't advertise - something to do with planning permission - but he has a large field full of vans and caravans with 24 hour security. Contact details are on the website for their B & B:

There is new open air storage about a mile south on the A34 from the M40 junction area Bicester towards Oxford. Was a disused large garage forecourt.
My Aunty knew Douglas Bader at Exeter airport where she was i\c while they filmed much of Reach for the Sky. He was quite a nasty sod apparently, injured of course by his own ego but nevertheless, a remarkable man but a 5hit all the same. He was there as an advisor.
