I am thinking of buying something like a SunnCamp Ultima 260 or similar, to use on our van. I am a bit concerned about how they stand up to the winds like we are having at the moment. Does anyone have any good - or bad experiences of these. We have a steel poled freestanding awning but it weighs a ton and is much too small to attatch to the van, but it is very sturdy!

I had a letter published in the Practical Motorhome magazine some years ago on the trials of putting up a Ventura Freestanding awning (excellent awning) especially when you are vertically challenged Health & Safety nightmare involving ladders etc.. so I thought the ultima might be the answer - just wind out the blind, slide awning in, wind blind back - end of story - easy peasy - but maybe not!

I bought a Sunncamp 260 for my Autotrail last year to take to Sapin with us.
Erected it on site - properly with all the edges pegged down, guy ropes, the lot. Really looked the biz and excellent storage as well.
It was a good talking point, I think everyone on the site came to admire it! "Where did you get it?", "How much?", "Would you sell it to us when you go home?" - said some fulltimers.
First decent wind - and you often get sudden gusty sort of winds in Spain in the winter - and it was bending and twisting all over the place. Caused a bit of concern. Other's awnings, safari rooms, cook tents weren't troubled at all. Next stiff wind a week or so later same thing but now the material started to rip where the guy ropes attached and was so bad that we had to take it down. If we han't I'm sure it would have been ripped to shreds. All a bit inconvenient and embarrassing.
We managed to squeeze our bikes into my pals £60 cook tent and that remained untroubled throughout the holiday!
On our return home I contacted Riversway Leisure who collected it and gave us a full refund.
