I'm thinking of replacing my Smart (Tiptronic auto) with a Toyota Aygo or the other permutations of the same car but with the auto option which apperars to be called 2 tronic. This looks the same as the Smart Tiptronic which is ok to tow in neutral.
So I'm looking for anyone with experience of towing the Aygo auto or any information on 2 tronic please.
Cheers Glyn

I was in a similar position to yourself regarding the automatic Aygo. I looked into this but decided to go for the C1 purely on price. I spoke to a gentleman called graham at Towbars 2 Towcars in Grimsby about the Aygo automatic. From what i recall there was no problems with towing the auto aygo and graham had a letter he showed me from toyota claimimg that it could be towed and didn't invalidate the warranty. it might be worth checking there website tow-bars2tow-cars.com to see if its explained in more detail.

Paul

We were in that position at the end of last year. We have a dealer in Weston who sells Toyota, Peugeot, Citroen and Honda. He said any of these "automatic" cars could be towed Aygo, 106, C1 and Jazz.
WRONG! we bought the Jazz as it was the biggest and in many peoples opinion the best car in its group, (J D Power, What Car etc.)
After taking delivery and reading the handbook it shows the usual stuff about only towing for a certain max number of miles and speed. Same as the Smart book says, but we all know Smart is wrong in saying that!
The dealer nor Honda were prepared to give me a letter saying it was ok to tow despite salesman saying yes it was ok. After a lot more "searching" we did find out that the other cars mentioned would be ok and Dealers would confirm by letter that fact. The "CVT" "Auto" system used in those cars are the same, but different to the Jazz.
We took the car back under the Honda 30 exchange plan and swapped it for a manual Jazz, which we now tow and do have a letter from Honda to say its ok to do so.
We did not go for the Toyota, Citroen or Peugeot as they were too small for our needs. I know people who have the Aygo on A frames and they are very happy with them and are trouble free.

The fact is that your dealer appears to have given you incorrect information. The Jazz has CVT transmission, which is constantly engaged and will suffer serious damage if you tow for any real distance. The 107, C1, and Aygo have the same system as the Smart in that they have an automated gearbox. This is basically a normal manual graebox, which has a computer that deals with such things as clutch control and gearchange. Therefore, when it is in neutral, it is exactly the same as neutral on a manual car. Simply, of the cars quoted, the Jazz is miles better than any of the others in terms of use, reliability, and residual value, but is the only one that cannot be towed in automatic form. If you really want the size and an automatic that can be towed, look for a good used Smart ForFour auto. The gearbox is the same principle as the normal smart and it is still more economical than any other car of equal engine size.

Paul, many thanks for the lead to Graham from Tow bars for towcars. He kindly gave me details and an email address for Toyota. I've emailed Toyota and received the following reply.
>>>Our technicians confirm the following information:
If you choose for an "automatic gearbox" in an Aygo you will have an MMT (Multi Mode Transmission). An MMT is not a classic automatic gearbox that most customers know, but this is actually a robotised manual gearbox.
This means that it's basic construction is a manual gearbox but with a clutch that is activated by a computer instead of the driver, this is why there is no clutch pedal needed.
Also a the gearshifts are taken care of by that computer instead of the driver. Of course the driver can still interfere in the shifting of the gears, but will just tell the computer in what gear you want to drive when changing the position of the lever. This gear lever has the same layout as the one from a classic automatic gearbox.
Since the MMT is a manual gearbox made the function automatic, it can be used like a normal manual gearbox, this means that there is no problem if you want to pull an Aygo (on all 4 wheels) behind a motorhome. It just needs to be put in neutral when pulled (like a normal manual gearbox).
The advice given by the technician is that when you want to buy an Aygo with MMT that you first makes a testdrive with one, because since the MMT is not a classic automatic gearbox, the car also doesn't behave in the exact same way as a car with a classic automatic gearbox (just to avoid confused expectations).>>>
This was received from Toyota Europe today and just to be absolutely sure I've asked the same question to Toyota UK. I'm waiting for a reply.
Hoping this helps someone else- I'm off tomorrow for 2 weeks in the MH.
Cheers, Glyn
