Sort of carrying over from Frank's thread about little 5th wheelers I was wondering about demountables.
There seem to be few suppliers in this country and yet they're very popular in the US etc. At first consideration they seem a sensible option as you can use the pick up for daily transport and leave the hab. bit on site whilst you explore a locality without too much van. You don't have the seperate vehicle disadvantages of a caravan and in theory remain a chugger rather than a tugger.
I s'pose the disadvantages might be you have to wear a baseball cap, have your head shaved, get several tattoos and various parts of you anatomy pierced , but other than that I can't see why they haven't 'taken off' here.
I must be missing something, can anyone explain?

Hi we got friendly with a German couple on our last trip with a crewcab truck and a demountable camper on the back. We had a look in it and were impressed with the room they had, and they had 2 dogs with them. The reason they did it was in Germany they have to pay alot for Insurance he said £1500 and road tax I think was £500 and they pay more VAT than us, so to keep the cost down they went and got a demountable because like he said you do not have to replace the camper body every so many years he just buys a new truck which he uses every day for work, worth a thought maybe! But we like a bit more room. Bob.

I joined today because the management has decide that we should have a demountable again. (The last one was not demountable on site as it had an enormous heavyweight separate pneumatic leg system which had to be left at home).
We currently have a small Freedom Jetstream tugger but she is convinced that it will tip over one day! We have camped pretty well in every style including a self built Starcraft Kit MH. (Take a Cortina and cut in half - throw away the back half!)
We are 69 so don't want too much heaving to get the body fitted. I was hoping that there might be an ad or two here but I see that one has just expired.
Any ideas please?
